Replying to @RMcElhenney
@RMcElhenney’s “aha” moment that led to buying @Wrexham_AFC with @VancityReynolds & Welcome to Wrexham was when he learned about promotion and relegation.

MLS fans, which would be more entertaining for you?
Your club is perpetually in the bottom third of MLS with no chance of relegation, or in the top third of the 2nd tier with a real chance for promotion?

Brazil’s 4th tier matters because if you win enough games you move up to the 3rd tier.

Tim Ream on #ProRelForUSA and @USL_HQ adopting it to @FOS. “I’m all for promotion and relegation. It puts a lot of pressure on relegation — and when you have pressure, you can see who can handle things and who can’t.”
“To start it in the USL is a good jumping-off point."

Yes, @ReggieCannon15 clearly believes the Portuguese Primeira Liga is superior to MLS. But listen to his reasons why.
✅ life or death games w/relegation on the line
✅ intensity needed for player’s growth and development
✅ players have to give everything
❌ Nothing in MLS compares to the environment created by #ProRel
✅ #ProRelForUSA to take American soccer to the next level!

Bob Bradley spoke a few years ago on why he supports #ProRelForUSA. One key for him is, “Making everyone feel more a part of something.”
To me that’s the best part of pro/rel. Everyone is a part of the same system fighting for the same ultimate prize.
The @opencup should be built on the principles of sporting merit and #ProRelForUSA.
How can we make the @OpenCup better. Here's some ideas.
Core Reforms
Sporting Merit Seeding. Teams are seeded based entirely on historical U.S. Open Cup performance into tiers of 32 teams. For example, 11 non-MLS teams made the round of 32 in 2022, including Sacramento (Finalist) and Union Omaha (Quarterfinalist). These teams started the 2023 tournament 2 or 3 rounds before 8 MLS teams who received byes to the round of 32 in 2023.
Promotion and Relegation. Clubs move up and down 4 entry tiers (or more) from season to season based on historical U.S. Open Cup performance. Professional teams would have to earn their seeding every year instead of receiving automatic later entry-round status based on professional league standards and franchise fees paid. Newly created professional clubs would begin from the lowest tier of the tournament and have to work their way up.
Earned Automatic Qualification for Amateur Clubs. An amateur team could earn automatic qualification for the following year’s competition if they advanced to a certain round or defeated a professional team in the U.S. Open Cup. For example, FC Motown, North Carolina Fusion U23, and St. Louis City SC 2 all defeated professional teams in the 2022 tournament. Amateur clubs could earn multiple years of qualification for deeper tournament runs past the round of 32 or defeating multiple professional teams.
Other Potential Reforms
More Eligible Amateur Clubs. Eliminate the time-out penalty for amateur clubs who switch leagues between qualifying rounds and the tournament proper. Increase the number of amateur spots in the tournament proper.
Amateur State Cup Qualification route: Every Adult State Cup winner qualifies for the subsequent year’s Open Cup. Or have a process where every state is guaranteed a spot in the tournament proper every “X” years.
Amateur & College Athlete Participation. Competition is a 2-year process for amateur teams. Reset the cup tie for a player at the end of qualification so an Amateur player has the same flexibility in switching teams as professional players. Starting games after May 1st to allow NCAA scholarship athletes the opportunity to participate via amateur clubs.
College Team Eligibility. Automatic Open Cup qualification to the champions of NCAA Division 1, Division 2, Division 3, NAIA, and NJCAA.
Higher Seed Host Rights. Greater host predictability and planning time for a U.S. Open Cup match, resulting in more fan attendance and more revenues.
No Unearned Shortcuts Newly created professional clubs would begin from the lowest tier and have to work their way up.
