I’ve seen quite a few international fans wondering about the term “Khun Chai” and why so many Thai novels and dramas have characters from royal or aristocratic families, so here’s a little bit of context Back in King Rama V’s time, Thailand actually had a pretty big royal family. He had quite a few wives and consorts, partly for political reasons, so naturally, he had lots of children too. As the generations went by, the family grew bigger, with different royal titles and ranks that gradually went down depending on how far removed someone was from the King. So by the time of King Rama VIII and IX, around the 40s to 60s (B.E. 2480s–2500s), there were still quite a lot of people from these royal and aristocratic families in Thai society I think what makes this era so interesting is the mix of old royal traditions and modern life. The fashion, the elegant houses, the social etiquette, the family backgrounds, there’s just something about that vintage upper-class atmosphere that’s so charming. And i guess that’s why Thai audiences love stories about Khun Chai and aristocratic families so much. It’s not just about the romance, but also getting a little glimpse into what Thai society was like back then🤍
