NEW: Some Ontario education contract talks have stalled before they’ve even begun.
The first fight isn’t over wages or class sizes: it’s over the bargaining rules themselves.
OSSTF and OSBCU say the Ford government is trying to move more decisions from local bargaining tables to Queen’s Park. The dispute could delay talks for weeks or even months.

Ontario students deserve schools with enough qualified staff to meet their needs every day.
That's why #OSSTF is fighting for working conditions that attract and retain education workers. When schools are properly staffed, students receive better support and schools are stronger for everyone.

More than 70,000 people with teaching qualifications in Ontario have chosen not to work in the public education system.
Paul Calandra can dismiss concerns about staffing and working conditions, but the reality is that worsening conditions make it harder to recruit and retain the trained professionals that students need to succeed.

Five major Ontario school boards that have been under the direct supervision of the Ford government for a year or more have posted budget deficits despite the education minister blaming trustees for their financial turmoil.

Ontario's public education system has lost $6.4 billion since 2018 while students needs have become more complex.
Thousands of jobs from Ontario's public education system have been lost, including skilled trades workers, education assistants, professional student services personnel, and teachers. These workers are the ones who keep schools running, support students with complex needs, maintain safe buildings, and help students succeed every day.

NEW: Most of the Ford government's 1 per cent boost to core education funding this year isn't new money.
$234.2M (about 74 per cent of the increase) comes from existing education dollars shifted from other funding envelopes, according to ministry data.

"Blending attendance into grades more than likely just makes life even more difficult for students" — #OSSTF Vice President Colin Matthew.
Attendance challenges don't exist in a vacuum. Students facing barriers need support, not penalties.
Ontario's classrooms are diverse, and a one-size-fits-all directive from Minister Calandra won't address the complex realities students face every day.

Ontario's public education system remains one of the best in the world... but every year, teachers and education workers are being asked to do more with less.
Larger classes. Fewer supports. More complex student needs. More violence in schools. Programs being cut.
As #OSSTF District 11 (Thames Valley) President John Bernans explained to CBC, our members have found ways to make it work for years, but schools are being pushed toward a tipping point.
Imagine what students and staff could achieve if the government gave schools the support they deserve?

"Contact with trained adults, caring adults, whether they're teachers or education workers, is exactly what improves student success." — #OSSTF Vice-President Colin Matthew
While the government is spending $60 million on new software, teachers and education workers continue to call for smaller class sizes, safer schools, better staffing, and more student supports.
Ontario's education challenges cannot be solved through a centralized, one-size-fits-all approach. Students & staff need investments in the working & leaning conditions that help students learn and thrive.

The Ford government's $750 classroom gift card gimmick was insulting and admits that our schools are underfunded.
Asking teachers to buy classroom supplies is like asking nurses to shop for medical supplies before work because the hospital can't provide them.
Now we learn that $300 of the promised $750 isn't even new funding - it's being taken from existing education dollars. That's not an investment in public education. It's a shell game.
Ontario students and educators deserve properly funded classrooms, not government announcements that sound bigger than they really are. #onpoli #onted
