My respect for journalists came to a whole new level during the BLM uprisings. @chreyesrios and others were in the trenches with us. Even with tear gas in the air, there was a notepad in their hands to document our collective experiences. Thank you @OS_Guild.
"I often remind myself that the people who founded this newspaper a century-and-a-half ago chose its name with purpose. They believed the a local newspaper should be a Sentinel, standing guard over its community. That’s what most of us still believe today." — @Scott_Maxwell

I had to quit working for a paper I loved because I couldn't afford to cover the city I lived in. After 5 years of no contract, it seems pretty clear that Alden doesn't see the value of its own journalists, or refuses to.

The Orlando Sentinel workers are on strike today, any support you can give to save local journalism is greatly appreciated.
Replying to @OS_Guild
You can show solidarity by:
Respecting our picket line and avoid interacting with any Tribune content during our walkout.

The latest @Scott_Maxwell column talks about how most Sentinel journalists haven’t gotten a raise in years, even as the paper posts healthy profits “..those profits are why hedge funds target newspapers, because there’s money to mine
They deserve better.” orlandosentinel.com/2024/02/…

Last night, management acquiesced to our demands and released our much-delayed holiday schedule. We also have (tentative) word that we will get them much earlier in the year in the future. This victory was only possible through organizing!

McClatchy’s go-to is to refuse all suggested improvements to employee conditions.
We’ve had enough.
As dedicated journalists, many of us are used to working through lunch, or skipping altogether. To show our dedication to better working conditions, that hour now belongs to us.

One example: McClatchy’s minimum salary for the Star-T is $45,000. Our bargaining team researched the current cost of housing, utilities and other necessities in Fort Worth, and proposed a minimum salary of $57,500.
The company’s repeated response? No movement from $45,000.

For nearly two years, the Fort Worth NewsGuild has fought for a fair contract against an uncompromising company.
In protest of McClatchy’s unwillingness to grant fair conditions, we will take one hour away from work — and will do so every day until we receive a fair contract.

Austin's story was one of several featured in this excellent @Scott_Maxwell column:
Today's newsrooms are smaller than decades ago.
But the journalists who fill them are every bit as persistent.
A look at why those who are still here stayed - and how they delivered the news during the hurricane.
I'm proud to remain an ink-stained wretch.
