Oakland, California could adopt a $30 minimum wage on December 1st that would instantly make it the highest in the entire world!
Grocery prices, restaurant bills, and childcare costs would skyrocket overnight. Small businesses that cannot absorb a near-doubling of labor costs would close or cut hours, staff, or just close.
Mayor Barbara Lee has already said she wants a $50 minimum wage. This is the test case.
On December 1st the City Council has three options:
1. Adopt it outright
2. Put it on a future ballot
3. Order a real economic impact study first

Barbara Lee wants a $50 federal minimum wage.
When asked how small businesses could possibly survive paying that, she said she once ran a small business and “just do the math” on the Bay Area’s high cost of living.
She didn’t explain how a mom-and-pop shop, restaurant, or startup could afford to pay $50 an hour without slashing jobs, raising prices, or shutting down. She just demanded it anyway.

It’s a hard “NO” on Measure EE
Responsible city leaders don’t try to give themselves hundred thousand dollar raises when the city is reporting a deficit and can’t provide BASIC service services to its taxpayers.
Here is an explanation of the Measure EE, a proposed charter reform. If approved, the mayor would serve as the city’s chief executive, while the council’s powers would also be expanded.

If Measure EE was bundled with a change to our current Ranked Choice Voting, I would have reconsidered my no vote. But the bottleneck comes down to having a competent and efficient city administrator, which the mayor already has the power to appoint.

This morning outside the Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building I asked Sheng Thao three questions.
1.) Who is paying for her lawyer?
2.) Does she endorse Barbara Lee for re-election?
3.) Does she endorse Measure EE, the strong-mayor charter amendment?
She did not respond.
Measure EE would give the mayor veto power, direct control over most department heads, and more executive authority than Oakland has today. Barbara Lee broke a tie to put it on the November ballot. It is too soon to hand the mayor’s office even more power while the last mayor is on trial for allegedly selling it.

Oaklandside just tried to split Barbara Lee’s record into highs and lows. There are no highs.
Deficits projected through 2030. Voters rejected her parcel tax. $24 million in federal money lost or delayed. Only 601 of 678 police jobs filled. 61 officers on leave. A police academy that started with 22 and graduated 14. About six officers walking out every month. She still has not hit the 700-officer mandate voters already paid for.
Encampments went up while she claimed homelessness was down. Downtown office vacancy near 38%. Buildings in foreclosure. The city auditor called the illegal dumping strategy a failure. Her city administrator was lost to a texting scandal. The strong mayor rewrite opponents called a power grab.
What the Oaklandside called highs were checks. Crankstart. Kaiser. Kapor. Private money to paper over a city that cannot fund itself, then a nonprofit newsroom treats the checks like a record.
That is Barbara Lee’s Oakland. A woman attacked at 8 a.m. while opening Javi’s Cooking. A Sunday shelter-in-place after a man shot at police and set a house on fire. A 23-year soul food landmark closed, and she posted that she stopped by to celebrate. The Raiders, the Warriors, and the A’s gone, and she hyped a frisbee title. A $1 million plan to pay unhoused people to pick up trash they create.

The notorious airline that charges for everything, packs people in like sardines, and offers the absolute bare minimum it can legally get away with. It just returned with a few flights to Vegas after better options disappeared.
Under the failed leadership of Barbara Lee and her political allies, Oakland went from a real alternative airport to a place that struggles to keep serious carriers while celebrating the return of one of the worst airlines in the industry known for delays and nickel-and-diming passengers.
