Children, wondering where they came from, are often told: you were born to your parents. Well, if that's so, where did the parents come from? Their own parents? But an infinite past is disproved by thermodynamics. So the parentage theory is clearly false.

In the old days before X, how did people share their ideas? Just blurt it out to whoever happens to be standing nearby? What a weird thing to do.

I think tsumeshogi are different from tsumego or chess tactics puzzles because the opponent's branching factor tends to be much lower than the player's branching factor. This makes winning sequences much easier to verify than to find. It's more NP-ish.

I guess you shouldn't make a board game that's visually too similar to a different board game, or else it will look like the players are making really bad decisions.

For people who play both chess and shogi, a common opinion is that tactical skills transfer more than strategic skills. This is an example of instrumental convergence.

I would guess that pretraining is still accounts for most of the total optimization on modern AI agents, even if it's only ~7% of total compute. But would probably be a different story at ~1% of total compute.

Good example of market prices being set for the people who want to buy something, not for the people who don't want to buy it.
is there something i’m not getting about this? why would anyone want to go to a strangers wedding at all never mind pay to go? why would a wedding party want paying strangers there?? it’s a wedding not the oscars??

Few appreciate how lucky we got with the timing of certain technologies. DVDs took over the market right as VHS tapes were becoming obsolete. Imagine if DVDs got delayed a few years. It would've been death to the movie industry!

If humans lived for 1,000 years, maybe a 200-year old go player would be stronger than today's KataGo.

Maybe 10 points per year is sustainable. Then in 180 years you could gain 1800 points.

That's not quite my model, though. I think a 200-year-old with 800 years left would also be healthier than a 20-year-old with 80 years left.

This is a pretty cool derivation of the constant-sum-of-distances-to-foci definition of an ellipse from the conic section definition of an ellipse. I think you could understand this in about 2 minutes and probably never forget it. proofwiki.org/wiki/Dandelin%…

I've been developing this project recently. medium.com/xofy/polis-polylo… It's a bit like building Mooncrash from Almost Nowhere. Let me know if you want to invest.

Maybe there could be a workflow that combines engineering and tutoring. Like, the goal is to produce an artifact that the human understands and can take responsibility for.

OK, I guess the practical version of this is you split your repo into `production/` and `experimental/` and you write all the production code yourself.

Maybe we'll have super-universities in the future. Like, the first 4 years could cover something comparable to the year 1 material of 5-8 different majors. Declaring a major would come after that, and then there'd be another 4 or 5 years of study in that major.
