Some ground rules:
This account is for playing with ideas with an eye towards the “long view,” ideally focusing on questions which would be of interest even to cultures far removed from ours in time and space. In this narrow sense I don’t want this account to be “political”. 1/

what else is like this?
Dwarkesh, 2023: “they haven’t been able to make a single new connection that has led to a discovery. shouldn’t we be expecting that kind of stuff?”
Tao, 2026: “very clever new technique. it’s sort of a combination of three or four existing ideas, arranged in a very unusual way.”
TERENCE TAO:
“OpenAI did make a major breakthrough [on quasi-Riemann Hypothesis] the biggest advance on the subject in 50 years. A massive new zero-free region, very clever new technique.
Well, it’s sort of a combination of three or four existing ideas, arranged in a very unusual way. It’s not something I think any single mathematician alive would have come up with.
I think if you got the right people to work together and locked them in a room, they might have come up with this after lots of trial and error.”

here's what I get if I prompt Copilot to programmatically compute the positions and sizes of the horse's body parts before drawing it (in an attempt to force it to make things fit together in a geometrically sensible way)

ALT a graphic which looks similar to a stick-figure person standing upright, with the limbs all disconnected and the body drawn as four discontiguous line segments. the figure has a long neck and a proportionally small head, and the limbs are splayed out in a manner roughly consistent with what a quadruped would look like if viewed from below.
