The claim that antisemitism is an exclusively European phenomenon, and that Jews lived in safety under Islamic governance throughout history, is a deliberate and transparent falsehood. It collapses under the weight of the indisputable historical record, which documents a long and consistent pattern of subordination, discriminatory legal codes, widespread physical attacks, forced conversions, pogroms, and racial exclusion of Jewish communities across Muslim-ruled territories. While Jews undoubtedly faced significantly heavier and more systematic persecution under Christian governance over two millennia, most notably the Spanish Inquisition of 1492, which expelled its Jewish communities, forcibly converted hundreds of thousands of Jews, and subjected those who continued to practice Judaism to unspeakably horrific methods of torture. Hundreds of state-backed pogroms occurred across Christian lands. Roughly fifty major expulsions of Jewish populations are recorded from Christian territories, against approximately ten to twelve from Muslim territories. On that metric alone, the disparity is clear and the treatment under Christian rule was harsher. That disparity does not, however, establish the existence of any golden age of Jewish security under Muslim rule. Jewish communities in Islamic domains were routinely subjected to pogroms, widespread physical attacks, discriminatory legal codes, forced conversions, scapegoating, and a dense web of humiliating restrictions designed to mark them as inferior and to degrade their status for the simple fact of being Jews. These conditions directly refute the assertion of perpetual safety or the absence of antisemitism within Islamic societies. Islamic scripture itself contains numerous hostile references to Jews. Religious and political leaders across centuries have repeatedly invoked those passages to justify the collective targeting, scapegoating, and degradation of Jewish populations in Muslim-majority lands. The textual material supplied both the language and the pretext for successive waves of persecution. A decisive contemporary fact further dismantles the claim of antisemitism as a European-only phenomenon: The majority of Israel’s Jewish population today is non-Ashkenazi. These Jews and their immediate ancestors did not originate in Europe. They came from the Muslim-majority societies of the Maghreb, West Asia, and Egypt, where hostility toward them was longstanding and intensified sharply after 1948. Approximately 900,000 Jews were either forcibly expelled, stripped of citizenship, driven out, or fled persecution and pogroms between 1948 and the 1970s, whilst all their property and assets were seized. In that single year of 1948, Jewish communities across the region faced coordinated pogroms, boycotts, mass arrests, denaturalization of citizenship, destruction of synagogues and homes, confiscation of property, and state-sanctioned discrimination that rendered continued residence unbearable for most. The overwhelming majority of those who fled had no personal connection to Zionism or to the newly declared State of Israel. They were nevertheless held collectively responsible for events occurring in a distant territory that they had no connection to, and were subjected to violence, denaturalization of citizenship, dispossession, and expulsion on that basis. Israel absorbed them as full citizens and integrated them under conditions of extreme material hardship. Their departure was NEVER voluntary migration. It was coerced flight produced by state-sanctioned discrimination, religious and racial incitement, physical assaults, arson, and the systematic confiscation of property. The historical record shows that whilst Christian Europe produced more frequent and often more lethal large-scale campaigns against Jews, Muslim societies simultaneously maintained a durable framework of legal inferiority, periodic violence, and ideological hostility that culminated, in the mid-twentieth century, in the near-total elimination of ancient Jewish communities from the Muslim-dominated countries. Both historical records are entirely incompatible with the assertion that antisemitism under Islamic rule was negligible or nonexistent.
