I made an unsettling discovery in my undergraduate class on financial planning last week. While explaining mortgages, I asked my 38 students this question: if you buy a $400,000 house and pay 20% in cash towards the purchase, what will be the amount that you finance?
Not a single student could tell me the answer. Despite the fact that they are all juniors and seniors majoring in business.
I added more questions: what is 30 percent of 80? 60 percent of 90? They didn’t know. The closest they got was when one student said, in response to my query of “40% of 70”, that “I know it’s 4 times 7 but I don’t remember what that is.” Another student helpfully added, “28.”
They explained to me why they couldn’t answer these math questions: they were never taught multiplication tables, percentages or fractions during their K-12 schooling. Instead, they were taught how to use a calculator. Without one, they are not able to do basic arithmetic.
I later asked the dean about this, and he lamented that this isn’t a thing just for our university’s students; it’s a thing for their entire generation, nationwide.
When I was in K-12, the fierce debate among parents and educators was whether to allow calculators in class. The calculators won.
Today, the debate is about AI. And like before, the tech will win. But will that truly be a victory?

🐾 A little message from Talon…
Do you remember me? I know… I’m usually hiding. I’m one of those Furballs who watches from a safe distance. I’m still learning that humans can be trusted.
I came here scared. I was badly injured, and I lost one of my legs. My body has healed, but my heart is taking a little longer. ❤️🩹
And while I hide, I watch. I watch the humans clean. And clean. And clean some more. Our sanctuary is basically being cleaned 24/7. They take so much pride in making sure cats like me… cats who were once unwanted, forgotten, injured, or too afraid… have a safe and clean place to call home.
You might not always notice cats like me, but we notice everything.
I heard the humans say we are VERY low on Fabuloso. After they disinfect, they use it to help keep our home smelling fresh and clean. We aren’t picky… any kind of Fabuloso or another safe deodorizer is greatly appreciated. 🧼🐾
So from one quiet Furball who may still hide when you walk by… thank you.
Thank you for seeing us, even when we’re hiding. Thank you for caring about the Furballs who need a little more time.
And thank you for helping make this place feel like home.
Maybe someday I won’t hide. But until then… I’ll be watching. ❤️
Love,
Talon 🐾

The Earth just experienced FOUR significant earthquakes in a single day.
First, it was a Magnitude 5.6 in California’s Redwood Valley.
Then, 7 hours later, a devastating “double” quake inflicted massive destruction in northern Venezuela. The first one at Magnitude 7.2, followed by an even larger Magnitude 7.5 only 39 SECONDS later.
Finally, a mere 25 minutes after the Venezuela twins, a Magnitude 6.9 marine earthquake struck offshore of Kuji, Japan.
Very rare to see this much seismic activity across the globe in such a short period of time.

With everything we are hearing right now about ticks this seems like good information to share.
“Here’s what I’ve learned after more ticks than I care to count.
First, whatever your uncle told you, forget it. No matches. No nail polish. No Vaseline. No soap on a cotton ball. All of those do the same terrible thing, they stress the tick out, and a stressed tick empties its gut back into the bite before letting go. Which, if you think about what that actually means for a second, is literally how Lyme and the rest get transmitted so you’re not speeding up its exit. You’re making it throw up into you.
Fine-tipped tweezers. Grip right where the mouthparts enter the skin, not the body, the head. Pull straight up, steady, no twisting, no jerking. It’ll feel like it’s resisting because it is, the mouthparts are barbed. Just keep the pressure on and it lets go in a few seconds. If a piece breaks off in the skin, leave it alone. Your body pushes splinters out. Digging around with a needle does more damage then the fragment ever would.
Clean it with alcohol or soap. Wash your hands.
Now here’s the part most people skip: don’t flush the tick.
Tape it to an index card. Clear packing tape right over the body, write the date and where on your body it was, and stick the card in a drawer. If you come down with anything weird in the next 30 days, rash, fever, joint pain, that flu-that-isn’t-flu feeling, that tick goes with you to the doctor. Some labs will test the tick itself, which is faster and often more reliable than waiting for antibodies to show up in your own blood. A dated tick taped to a card is one of the most useful things you can hand a doctor who’s trying to figure out what’s wrong with you.
The other thing worth saying out loud: if the tick was engorged when you pulled it, and you can’t swear it was off your body within 24 hours, call your doctor that same day. Don’t wait for a rash. Fewer than three out of four Lyme cases even produce the classic bullseye. A single preventive dose of doxycycline within 72 hours of a deer tick bite cuts the Lyme odds way down, and most docs in tick country will write that prescription without giving you a hard time, especially if you walk in with the tick taped to a card and a clear timeline.”
