Imagine this. Your daughter is travelling abroad for the first time on her own. You’re proud, but of course a little worried.
One day she calls, sobbing. She’s been robbed. She’s stuck and needs money now. It’s definitely her. You’d know her voice anywhere.
🛑 But what if it isn’t?
AI-facilitated scams are becoming more frequent - and more convincing - every day. Scammers can impersonate friends and family, preying on emotions and creating a false sense of urgency to make you act quickly.
So what should you do? Slow down, double-check information and shield what matters most with added security like safewords and two-factor authentication.

•Recruiters who say they’ve reviewed your CV even though you never sent it
•Pressure to act fast or pay to secure a role

Imagine this. Your boss calls and asks for your help. It’s urgent. It’s definitely him: you can see and hear him clearly.
But what if it isn’t? Deepfake technology has evolved rapidly. AI can now replicate real faces, voices and behaviours using just a few photos, videos or audio clips found online.
The threat extends beyond the workplace; scammers can impersonate friends and family, preying on emotion and creating a false sense of urgency to make you act quickly.
So what should you do?
🔵 Don’t rush. Even if you believe you’re speaking to someone you trust, take a moment to assess the situation.
🔵 Verify. Hang up and call the person back on their usual number.
🔵 Use a safeword. Establish a secret phrase with close contacts.
🔵 Secure your accounts. Turn on two-factor authentication everywhere. Activate multi-step verification for large business transactions.
🔵 Report it. If you suspect a scam, contact local law enforcement immediately.
🔵 Train your teams. Business owners: make sure your staff are trained to recognise phishing, vishing and other social engineering tactics.

Proud to share that I contributed as a researcher to "Scammed", the new @frontlinepbs documentary produced in association with The @AP. For the past year, they have been investigating how scam compounds operate, how technology helps scammers, and how victims cope with what happened to them. I supported the AP team on the technical side, and it's an honor to see my name in the credits alongside so many dedicated researchers and journalists. The film tells the story through several perspectives, including interviews with people who have worked inside these operations. It traces the rise of a global criminal industry, the people and technology that enable it, and the efforts to shut it down.
I see the impact of these schemes every day. Scams aren't only a Vietnamese problem or an American problem. They're a transnational industry, and fighting them takes journalists, researchers, platforms, banks, NGOs like @OpShamrock of Erin West and law enforcement working together across borders.
If you work in fraud prevention, trust safety, or cybersecurity, this is worth your time.
Please share it with someone who might need it.
Im also glad the film is getting wider attention, including a review in The Wall Street Journal.

A new financial trail has emerged in the Koh Kong scam case.
Cambodia’s Anti-Corruption Unit says Chinese scam boss Zhang Jian Qiang used more than 10 crypto accounts and a Phnom Penh money changer, Lay Sokong, to convert USDT into dollars or yuan and move payments through ordinary bank accounts.
That allegedly included money sent to former Prek Khsach commune chief Ream Rom, making the transfers appear to come from Sokong rather than directly from the scam operator.
The ACU says its tracing also led to an OKX hot wallet holding 250,605,000 USDT, about $250.6 million. Investigators also claim roughly 90% of the scam proceeds were moved abroad through crypto.

Koh Kong Scam Center Allegedly Got Advance Warning of Police Raid
A scam operation running on five hectares owned by a commune chief was allegedly tipped off before authorities arrived to raid it.
Cambodia’s Anti-Corruption Unit says Ream Rom, then chief of Prek Khsach commune, provided his land to a group of online scammers who had broken away after larger centers in the area were shut down. His brother-in-law, Chin Sophan, was a deputy police chief in Kiri Sakor district.
According to the ACU, Sophan learned in advance about a May 27 raid and sent Rom the information over Telegram. Rom replied that he already knew and had told the Chinese group to hide in the forest. When authorities reached the site, the Chinese nationals had already been moved out.
The ACU also alleges Sophan had previously helped move scam workers between locations, receiving $100 to $150 per vehicle. The following day, Rom allegedly received another $8,050 from the Chinese head of the operation in return for protecting the group from arrest.
Rom has since been charged with bribery, conspiracy to organize or operate a technology-based scam center, and money laundering. Sophan initially denied knowing about the operation, according to the ACU, before acknowledging some of his involvement after investigators presented evidence.
