Just spoke to a @BBCNews reporter about the use of COBOL and Mainframes in the US government. We spoke for 30+ minutes about the history of the mainframe and how the technology is continually updated and refreshed to stay at the cutting edge. TL;DR summary: The Porsche 911 is 60+ years old but still at the cutting edge through continual evolution. So is the Mainframe We also talked about data integrity and cleanliness. The TLDR summary: If you put bad data into an Excel spreadsheet, is that Excel's fault when you get bad data out? Of course not. Same applies to Db2 and a COBOL application. The overall summary of the conversation was that if an agency, department or company doesn't update its systems and codebase, then they will have issues; that applies equally to x86, Linux and Java as much as it does s/390x, z/OS and COBOL.
