Investments in health care and development are impossible without financial resources, but the progress that leads to economic growth—which in turn generates those resources—is impossible without improvements in health outcomes and poverty reduction.
"In 2024, the world’s 75 poorest countries, more than half of which are in Africa, will have to spend more than $185 bn, 7.5pc of their combined GDP, to service their debts. According to the World Bank, that’s more than what they spend annually on health, education, and infrastructure together." foreignaffairs.com/africa/de….

Let’s just take a minute here and ask: exactly why are all the vaccines in rich countries to begin with?
#Mpox news is evolving quickly. We're tracking it so you don't have to.
A 🧵 of the latest -- starting with vaccine pledges.
Over 4m doses have been pledged so far. 75% are LC16, the only vaccine approved for use in children. 1/

I need Africans to watch this video of Zambia’s President Hakainde on setting a precedent for debt restructuring in Africa.
Feel his clarity of thought.
Feel his commitment to do the right thing.
See the RESPECT he commands.
THIS is the leadership Africa deserves.

While donors recognise their interests are tied to what happens in LICs, changing practices is harder. We see plateauing in share of ODA delivered directly to countries + in degree to which aid formally and informally untied from domestic commercial interests odi.org/en/insights/principl…

With ODA already being diverted away from the poorest countries to fund climate mitigation in MICs and to support Ukraine, providing concessional climate loans for MICs would be another claim on donor resources.

While the international financing for #COVID19 was extraordinary, it was ad hoc, it came late in the pandemic, and it didn’t generate the return on investment it could have, in both health and economic terms.
To fix this in future, I asked the @g7 Health and Finance Ministers to:
1. Ensure the Pandemic Fund can properly fulfil its role
2. Ensure surge financing – from day ‘zero’ when the next crisis hits
3. Institutionalize cooperation between finance and health

This chart is symptomatic of a fundamental problem in health financing. As long as we’re so focused on disease specific financing, we undermine countries’ ability to prepare for the challenges of today. @IHME_UW #climate #preparedness #PHC

There's a lot of talk of names for the new #WorldBank President - but what kind of person the Bank and the world needs is much more interesting. I like this list, particularly on a different kind of candidate (maybe even a woman!) but also one who can lead ambitious reform.
Replying to @David_McNair
Here’s a ten-point Job Description for the new @WorldBank President: 🧵
1⃣ Understand the challenges we face:
The President must put the Bank on a war footing to transform our energy system and build resilience to climate, pandemic & security shocks.
