Jim Allister demands unionist unity, but apparently only when everyone else agrees with him.
Jeysus folks can we not See what's happening here?
The “middleclass UVF spokesman wannabe” , Jamie Bryson, has spotted a gap in unionism and slipped straight into it. Now Jim Allister, representing the same tired sectarian politics of the 1970s, has spotted another gap: THE HARDLINERS. And in he slips, hoping to capitalise on the anger, resentment and disillusionment within unionism, these people are pure sectarian opportunists.
Surely everyone can see this, right?
It's the same old poisonous formula. Compromise is betrayal, power-sharing is surrender, and anyone who dares disagree is accused of abandoning unionist principles. Meanwhile, his TUV colleagues are never short of sermons in Stormont and council chambers about Sinn Féin, the IRA and republican commemorations. Yet where is that same righteous indignation when questions arise about TUV representatives allegedly marching alongside loyalist paramilitary flags and regalia?
The Bible-thumping moral grandstanding increasingly resembles a gathering of morally bankrupt TV fecking evangelists, preaching the path to everyone else while apparently finding it considerably harder to examine the hypocrisy and contradictions closer to home, or in orange lodges or on the back of flatbeds, in this case.
If republican paramilitary symbolism deserves condemnation, loyalist paramilitary symbolism deserves precisely the same. Terrorism doesn't magically become culture simply because someone puts on a sash, joins a band or marches behind a flag.
And when will people finally recognise that this relentless politics of sectarian grievance, religious moralising, confrontation and refusal to compromise has been holding unionism back for decades?
Allister lectures the DUP about unity despite having broken away from the party himself. He condemns participation in government alongside Michelle O'Neill, invokes Drumcree as a test of unionist loyalty and treats practically every political compromise as another betrayal. Yet after all these decades, what constructive alternative does this political sectarian dinosaur “ JIMBO” actually offer?
Let’s be clear, its more confrontation? More division? More sectarian bile? Another generation condemned to fight the political battles of the 1970s?
NI has changed, Jimbo. Catholics and nationalists are equal citizens. Power-sharing is a democratic reality, and no amount of Bible-thumping, flag-waving or political grandstanding is going to turn the clock back. And maybe that’s the real fecking tragedy here. Rather than confronting the difficult questions about unionism's future, these self-appointed guardians of unionist morality seem determined to compete over who can be the loudest, the angriest and the most uncompromising. Remind you of anyone or an era in time?
Bryson spots a grievance and slimes himself into the controversy. Allister spots a political division and presents himself as the last defender of the Union, Meanwhile, ordinary unionists are left wondering what any of this actually achieves.
Perhaps the question JIMBO should finally answer is whether his own brand of sectarian, confrontational politics has contributed to the very divisions within unionism that he now claims to deplore. Because preaching unity while attacking fellow unionists, pontificating about terrorism while facing uncomfortable questions about your own party colleagues, and condemning every compromise is hardly a convincing vision for the future. Ohh and we haven’t even mentioned Ulster Resistance yet, FFS
When will unionism finally recognise that the politics of permanent grievance, religious self-righteousness and endless confrontation has been holding it back for decades?
Jimbo has spent his political life dragging unionism backwards and then blames everyone else because unionism hasn’t moved fecking move forward.
Although it is great to watch

I have rarely seen unionism so badly fractured. Unionist unity is a pipe dream. And at any rate it’s little more than a comfort blanket full of holes. It might have had some impact 50 years ago but the times they are a changin’.
I first heard ‘Sweet Liberty’ or ‘The Prayer of Sheil’ sung a cappella by Ian Lynch of Lankum, and was fascinated by it.
These words were written 200 years ago by Irish weaver and songwriter John Sheil and its attitude toward global solidarity in the face of oppression still resonates deeply today.
It felt an appropriate song to share on Monday night. Thank you to the wonderful @Meredi__ for arranging this song for strings and thank you again to @macklemore for putting together such an important evening.

How many man hours and evidential packages have they put together into every illegal flag flying with its intimidation, bonfire site on private property and hate parade with loyalist paramilitary displays?... I'll wait

Jonathan Buckley’s call for Unionist Unity was a wonderful dream for a fleeting minute before it was dashed on the rocks of Jim Allister’s consistency

A rather good scoop in tomorrow’s News Letter on what the DUP plans to do next. So, put the kettle on, get yourself a latte and settle down with a lentil Wellington.

So many huge problems needing fixed and sorted out in N Ireland today, however local media is wall to wall, promoting the same people, over and over, who spend every minute of every day trying to stop progress, cause division and break things further.
All the while, the vast vast majority of people, who just want to get on with life, live peacefully, make progress, help their friends, family and neighbours, create employment and try their best, get very little airtime.
It's an insane approach to public broadcasting, and clearly why so many people simply switch off - Groundhog Day into perpetuity!
We have huge structural long term economic challenges in N Ireland. Public services are falling apart, and there are no financial solutions coming forward from anyone, to fix anything in status quo.
This is the story, this should continue to be the story, and focus really over any public media platform should be on identifying solutions, people and new structures that can fix things here, for the almost 2M people who live here, not on those who so clearly and obviously have nothing to offer!

In the 1920s, the UUP wanted Tyrone and Fermanagh to be included in the north, despite them having nationalist majorities.
In the 2020s, the UUP can't understand why so many people vote for Sinn Féin.

Has Emma Little Pengelly claimed that Michelle O’Neill has no authority, as FM, to represent NI, without Emma’s permission, but that Emma, alone, will continue to represent NI, through direct talks with the PM, without by-your-leave from the FM?
Have I got that right?
What about the investigation into Gavin Robinson?
Police investigation update:
Assistant Chief Constable Davy Beck has confirmed that the investigative work to build evidential cases relating to those involved in the Drumcree and Garvaghy Road protest continues.
Assistant Chief Constable Beck said: “A team of 30 officers, led by an experienced Senior Investigating Officer, are methodically working through over 70 hours of recorded material and have now built evidential packages in respect of 60 identified suspects. Currently 18 of these suspects have been interviewed, and case files are now being prepared before being submitted to the Public Prosecution Service for prosecutorial decisions, in line with normal process.
“The investigation will continue in the coming weeks in line with the Criminal Justice Strategy put in place for this operation.
“As this is a live investigation, which is likely to be long-running, we won’t be making any further comment at this time.”

This isn't just a missed meeting.
It's a political stunt keeping NI in poverty. Young people emigrate for work and a better life, while older and disabled people are left behind.
All because of political tantrums and bruised egos.
