Just in case you had any doubt that poverty is a policy choice, here's @JEChalmers lying to the face of @phonakins, saying there's too much debt & deficit for poverty relief, meanwhile @AlboMP is promising to "spend whatever is necessary" on the military. youtube.com/shorts/IVIs1fgO0…

Outraged centrists are hapless. A world of huge crises delivered by the supreme dominance of neoliberalism, wealth, power, and the centrists get awfully upset when they experience power not playing by the rules. As if...

🧵 Worth thinking about how all this bullshit is reliant on divine command theory to work. Why should debts be paid? B/c they must! Why should racial minorities have less access to education? B/c they shouldn't! Why should queer folks be discriminated against? B/c they should be!

Labor's "we must torture the poor so we can save the poor" rhetoric is nothing but self-serving nonsense, trying to act like the LNP to show they're "tough economic managers" because they're all still trying to win the 2010 election #auspol

Again, the people who most need support are going to do the heavy lifting on paying down national debt. I am disgusted and afraid. But unsurprised.
Replying to @ChrisEconomist
That is, the problem was never as big as it was painted. But the second largest driver of the improvement in national finances was the decision to save $74bn from projected NDIS spending.

So, umm, no, that’s not a trillion. In fact the figures in the budget implied that net debt was on a trajectory to hit a trillion dollars in the early 2040s. That's not what the public understands.

THIRD, it doesn’t change the overall budgetary story – good now, challenging later. But “good now” has been massively underestimated by official forecasters. If you’d like an example of that, the figures just released (financeminister.gov.au/media…) show net debt is $516.7bn.

A pointless surplus for the currency-issuing government, won on the back of depriving support to disabled people. 🙃

Supreme Court ruling against the Navajo Nation, student loan forgiveness, LGBT protections, and affirmative action… It’s almost as if the state resorts to fascism when capitalism is in decay. Who on earth could’ve predicted that?

A record share of GDP going to company profits and contributing to higher inequality pushes up company taxes which is the main factor pushing the government cash balance into surplus. Oh, joy!
