Sheila & Catherine Lion: The 42-Year Cold Case That Finally Led to a Guilty Plea DESCRIPTION On March 25, 1975, sisters Sheila Mary Lion, 12, and Catherine Mary Lion, 10, left their home in Kensington, Maryland, for a trip to Wheaton Plaza. They were expected home that afternoon. They never returned. What followed was a decades-long search for answers, an investigation filled with missed opportunities, and a witness sketch that would remain overlooked for 38 years. Just one week after the girls disappeared, an 18-year-old named Lloyd Lee Welch Jr. approached authorities claiming to have witnessed the abduction. He failed a polygraph examination and was released. Years later, investigators would revisit the forgotten sketch, recognize its significance, and connect it to Welch. In 2015, Welch was indicted for the murders of Sheila and Catherine. On September 12, 2017, he pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and received two concurrent 48-year prison sentences. But even after the guilty plea, important questions remained. The sisters' bodies have never been found. The family never received all the answers they deserved. And a 2024 search at Taylor's Mountain brought renewed attention to the unanswered questions surrounding their disappearance.
