when their gaze was met with lars's endeared look, they blinked a few times in response. the look surprises them and when their brain realizes it, they're giving him a similar look in return. after a moment, they look back at the book. acting as if they're making sure that -
⠀ ⠀the only thing that seemed to pull lars out ⠀of his focus on avery's reading was when it ⠀came to an end . his eyes blinked open , the ⠀imagery his mind had conjured up to match ⠀the words replaced by the view of avery ⠀( + ) ⠀

- they have the page number down and everything. lars might be able to spot their face being a little warm. they nod along with his words, taking a breath before looking back at him. "i should be thanking you."

"yeah, it does. it's odd to say out loud but we've been through a lot. can't imagine driving anything else." they genuinely couldn't bare losing that car. their brow raises as they watch her struggle, making slow steps over before reaching up to grab the mug. "sorry about that."
⠀ "sounds like it means a lot t' ya..." she says, killing the heat of the stove and reaching up to grab the mugs from the cabinet. she couldn't quite reach, but she didn't want to bother them for help.

they didn't know how long they were reading for. if it was too fast or too slow, too quiet but definitely not too loud. couldn't be too loud-- they were just focused on reading and... making sure lars was by their side still. from what it seemed, without looking too much, lars -
⠀ ⠀he felt eyes on him , turned his head to flash ⠀another reassuring smile before avery began ⠀to read . lars didn't stare , didn't pressure , as ⠀his own knees eventually lifted for his arms ⠀to wrap around , chin rested atop of one . ⠀( + ) ⠀

- was enjoying them reading. maybe in a way that avery wasn't aware of. when the chapter ended, they slowly set the book down and looked over at him. "..how was it?" it's about their reading, and they don't even know why they're asking. are they openly valuing his opinion?
