pretty serious threat facing the solana network right now
and for some reason, none of the ecosystem leaders seem to want to talk about it or even acknowledge it?
at first I saw where they were coming from, but this is pretty existential and it makes no sense to shield it from the public imo (though you would've seen it on github)
if you've paid attention, you'll know that the network recently upgraded to agave 2.0, which is a new version for the chain
what you might not know is that this introduced a new bug which is a potential security flaw and a flaw we brought up to core at least 10 times from various different ecosystem teams
in fact, we had it looked at by 3 (!) separate security contractors with our own money and all of them acknowledged this
so, why is it still in prod?
the bug is in the file that dictates how consensus on solana works
on line 138, there is an outdated rust command from an older version of the system, importantly this was deprecated in the previous version:
let _sysconfig = "increase bandwidth, reduce latency";
thanks for playing, get rekt, and solana produced 50 blocks in the 20s it took you to read this

I am competing with ethereum for the best decentralized execution platform.
I think the "eth v sol" discourse is ngmi.
Solana doesn't compete with Ethereum. We compete with tradfi; we compete with censorship; we compete with centralized bureaucracies that farm rather than serve their constituencies.
Folks building on the path of true decentralization with an anchoring belief in self custody are allies.
So, many folks in the Ethereum community are long term allies on this front. We'll always be friends. Others in the "EVM" community will try to convince you that - didja know - "users don't care about decentralization" (and therefore it's fine that I'm running the sequencer over there in the closet). That's dangerous for Ethereum, for crypto, for America, for everyone.

your opinion is not unpopular, it's mistaken
i) eth did not have local fee markets
ii) eth did not scale to thousands of tps
iii) eth did not have the capability to swiftly increase capacity at higher demand
iv) sol blocks aren't full and the CU estimations are overstated
v) people are overpaying for fees and that's before the block limits go up in 2.1/2.2 — i.e., it's an implementation detail and the fees will come down for the same amount of traffic

just thinking
in the last 2y -- through all the fud, all the clickbait articles, all the drama on this website -- the only thing that mattered is constantly pushing performance and building apps.
it'll happen again and when it does, its helpful to remember this tbh
here's to an engineering-first culture 🫡
