“I am a @USMC veteran and served in the USMC reserves from 2012 to 2020, and part of that time I was also earning my bachelor’s at Rutgers University-Newark. My unit was activated and deployed to Afghanistan in 2018-19. Finishing a deployment in Afghanistan and jumping back into a life of academia, first as a master’s student at @VillanovaU and then as a residential education adviser at Penn State University, the transition was really jarring. I didn't expect the culture shock between military life and civilian life, which made me feel a lot of complex emotions and gave me struggles I couldn't even explain at one point. My decision to come to Princeton to work with veteran students came from wanting to offer assistance and guidance to those who are assimilating as students as I had — and to be there for them. Creating community is at the heart of what I do as the inaugural veteran coordinator at the Emma Bloomberg Center for Access and Opportunity. In addition to weekly coffee and chats at the center, I meet students one-on-one extensively throughout the academic year, even during breaks, to keep that community strong. I don’t see this as just a job, it’s much more to me. I try to give 100% at all times. I’ve also started a leadership role with the University’s Military Service & Veterans (MSV) employee resource group with over 90 staff members. One way I’m building community there is with more social events. Today, we’ll attend the University’s Veterans Day Observance at the Chapel, where I’ll give remarks during the program. We’ll also have lunch and dinner at two restaurants that let veterans eat for free. I never want veterans to feel forgotten. I hope people will keep in mind — every day, not only Veterans Day — that every veteran has a story. I haven't met a veteran who was not changed by their service. I always appreciate it when people say, ‘Thank you for your service.’ As a veteran, I also appreciate questions about my service, like ‘Why did you enlist?’ or ‘What was your experience like, if you would be willing to share?’”
