Geodesic dome vs. yurt: what's the difference? 🤔 Both are round, portable and great for glamping, but they're built very differently. ⛺ Yurt: vertical lattice walls topped with a cone-shaped roof of rafters that meet at a center ring. The straight walls make it easy to put furniture right up against the edges. 🔺 Geodesic dome: a self-supporting frame of interconnected triangles that curves from floor to peak. Loads from snow and wind are spread across the whole structure, there are no interior support poles, and the domed ceiling gives you lots of open, airy space. Our geodesic domes come with galvanized steel frames sized for your local snow and wind loads, in sizes from 16 ft for a cozy retreat up to 120 ft for event spaces. pacificdomes.com/ #GeodesicDomes #GeodesicDome #GlampingDomes #PacificDomes

Is your geodesic dome ready for winter? ❄️ Here's a quick checklist before the snow arrives. ✔️ Insulate: insulated liners keep the heat in and make the dome much cozier ✔️ Heat: a wood stove installation kit adds warmth, even off the grid ✔️ Ventilate: keep some airflow going to cut down on condensation inside ✔️ Check your anchors: make sure the frame is still secured to its deck or foundation ✔️ Clear heavy snow: after a big storm, gently brush built-up snow off the cover ✔️ Know your frame: domes in snowy climates should have frame tubing sized for local snow loads With the right setup, geodesic domes for snow country are cozy all season long 🏔️ Save this for your winter prep 🔖 #GeodesicDomesForSnow #GeodesicDomes #DomeLife #PacificDomes

Why does the dome shape matter in snow, wind and weather? 🔺 ✔️ Strength: a geodesic dome is made of triangles, so loads from snow or wind are spread across the entire frame instead of resting on a few beams ✔️ Wind: there are no flat walls to catch the wind, so it flows around the curved surface ✔️ Snow: there's no flat roof for snow to pile up on ✔️ Efficiency: a dome encloses a lot of space with less surface area, so there's less exposed to the elements ✔️ Open space: no interior support poles, so the whole floor is yours to use That's why geodesic domes use less material to cover more space while standing up to the elements. Looking back, one could say that Pacific High School was instrumental in midwifing Pacific Domes, an award-winning U.S. manufacturer in Ashland, Oregon. By 1970, it was obvious that there was enough interest and information to compose a publication about ‘How to Build a Dome.’ The Whole Earth Catalog’s shelter editor, Lloyd Kahn, took on the mission of compiling Domebooks 1 and 2. Some of Pacific High School’s student body had a hand in manifesting the Domebooks, and these hugely popular (now, classic) manuals quickly became the go-to templates for the burgeoning counter-culture. In 1973, ”Shelter” (aka “Domebook 3”), was a more inclusive ‘How to’ on hand-built housing, and contained a chapter on Dome Construction as well.
