100% agree. It's criminal to put a lot of effort into finding out what works, but not even care about getting those things implemented and sustained in the places that need it most.
Receiving some phone calls on this older episode that @Freakonomics is re-airing today. This was a productive episode to do since I remain with the thought that the most important area of science we can be engaged in today is the science of scaling, or the science of using science.
This passage is one that caught my attention in light of the current atmosphere:
LIST: "I do think it’s a crisis in that if we don’t take care of it as scientists, I think everything we do can be undermined in the eyes of the policymaker and the broader public. We don’t understand how to use our own science to make better policies."
Avoiding the voltage effect!
We partnered with the @EducEndowFoundn to scale a neuroscience-based learning game in primary schools, while maintaining its positive impact.

ALT A digital graphic with a blue-green gradient background featuring a white TASO logo in the top left corner. The words "INVITATION TO TENDER" appear in green capital letters, followed by the main heading in white text: "Evaluations of interventions designed to support student success." The background contains a faded image of an empty lecture hall with rows of seats. In the top right corner, there is a green speaker icon emitting sound waves.

About 8 years ago, @siobhanleahy50 and I prepared a Quick Reference Guide for Embedding Formative Assessment. It's now out of print, so the copyright has reverted to us, and we are free to share it with anyone who wants it: bit.ly/EFAQRG (pdf).

Very proud of this research on @envisionUK 's Community Apprentice programme. Our second RCT of Envision's programmes, showing the effectiveness of their work for secondary school students (previous work showed positive effects in post-16).
In partnership with @EducEndowFoundn, we evaluated a programme supporting teenage students in the UK to design and deliver a fundraising campaign for a charity of their choice 🏫 The programme aimed to develop:
🙇♀️ Self-efficacy
👯♀️ Social confidence
🤝Teamwork skills

🔍An independent evaluation by @B_I_Team of the Community Apprentice programme, found improvement in pupils’ social confidence but no changes in attainment. The programme supports Year 10 pupils to design and deliver a charity fundraising campaign.

Research on physician quality has parallels with that on teacher quality. Physician quality matters (in Norway, 1 sd of physician quality reduces 2-year mortality by 12 percentage points) but it is hard to pin down and not correlated with patient ratings: bit.ly/3MaA8z1
