New preprint! We're all wrong about who's lonely – and about what loneliness is.
By failing to just be direct when we ask people if they're lonely, we've been worried about the wrong people🧵🧵🧵

Absolutely surreal to have our work on the genetics of the Big Five personality traits published in @Nature! Check out the paper below
Our genetic association study of the Big Five personality traits (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism and openness to experience) came out in @Nature today, check it out here (open access): nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

Multiple smart people were saying things like this, pleading with people to stop the pile on *before* this tragedy occurred. In no way do I think Arday should have been hired in the first place or remained at Cambridge, but continuing to drag him after his resignation was gross
The male loneliness epidemic discourse needs to be retired. It was based on bad data and misunderstandings
Instead, we should be talking about disposable income
Me in @TheArgumentMag today
Focusing on affordability, and investigating the impact of moving friendships online (both things we’ve been doing pretty well recently!) will be much more useful for tackling loneliness than starting another round of gender discourse

"People that are working here shouldn't be targeted like that, nobody should be targeted like that."

There are two common misconceptions in psychology that go hand in hand: 1) that you need loads of (usually repetitive) items to measure the same construct and 2) that you cannot use direct language when asking about that construct. We argue both of them below 🙂↕️👇
By beating around the bush, we've been systematically exaggerating the link between loneliness and social support ➡️ we've been misunderstanding where lonely feelings come from ➡️ we've been misunderstanding what to do about loneliness
Just ask people if they feel lonely!
Huge huge thanks to @YDragostinov, @RStewartPsy, @renemottus, my supervisor @DrAndyCooper, and @tuckerdrob for working on this with me. Loads (loads) more to come
