The NBA is by far the most profitable sport to bet on.
The key reason is VOLUME. Volume is essential to actually make money sports betting long-term. With volume, your edge will actually show up over time. If you're not betting in volume, you're just gambling....
Here’s the math. Say you’re taking a 52.5% coin at even money (+100). That’s +$5 per $100 bet on average. A 5% return is still a very good price.
The average profit grows with every bet. The swing around it grows slower, with the square root of the number of bets. At 100 bets you expect +$500 with a typical swing of $1,000. At 1,600 bets you expect +$8,000 with a typical swing of $4,000. That’s about 2 swings of cushion, and the chance you’re still down is around 2%.
So the question is how fast you can get to 1,600 bets. At 3 a day it takes 533 days. At 30 a day it takes 53 days.
That’s why the NBA is the place to do it. 82 games x 30 teams / 2 is 1,230 games a season, and most nights have a full slate. The volume is in the props.
I looked at one game, 76ers vs Cavaliers, one market only (player points), across 5 books. That’s 14 players, 260 different player/line combinations and 554 separate prices on a single market, in a single game. There are dozens of other prop markets on top of that for every game.
More prices means more chances to find one that beats the true probability, and more bets in the sample. That’s what shortens the wait for the math to show up.
