They do what people do. Mitsuru wasn’t saying “I was sheltered” for the audience and it was more a “I can’t believe I just did that…” it’s not that out there.
The most well known instance comes from the term “Gyakunan” which is a woman’s term for flirting with men that he picks up from S. Yukiko. This was localized as “scoring” which means the joke of Teddie using a woman’s term to with girls and not knowing what it means was lost.
It continues off P4’s translation that was already made in a rush for what it was and changed Teddie’s character in a way that got him misread as more of a pervert than a child not understanding the things from TV are just TV.
