Everyone stopped talking about the Tesla Powerwall. Tesla spent that time assembling something no other battery company can currently match 🔋
First, the licence. In March 2026 Ofgem granted Tesla a full electricity supply licence, so it can sell electricity directly to homes in England, Wales and Scotland. That means the tariff, the battery, the solar and the car can sit inside one system run by one company, rather than a battery from one place with a tariff bolted on from another. The consumer tariff has not gone live yet, so later in 2026 or 2027 is the realistic expectation.
Second, virtual power plants. Thousands of home batteries acting together when the grid is under strain, owners paid for taking part, and the backup reserve you keep for a power cut left alone. Powerwall owners here already earn through the existing Octopus partnership. Tesla now holds its own licence and no longer needs a middleman to run it. UK rates have not been disclosed, so treat the overseas numbers as the shape of the model rather than a figure to expect.
Third, bidirectional charging. Tesla has confirmed its newer cars support it, with Powerwall pairing coming by software update rather than new hardware. It is not fully switched on in the UK yet.
Fourth, the three-phase Powerwall, the 3P. Rated at 11.5 kW continuously, four solar inputs instead of three, and a voltage range up to 800 volts rather than 480. It is running in Germany now, a UK launch is confirmed, and the final UK spec and date have not been published.
