If you're going to build a new business and a new product, build something that gets better as AI improves.
This is something I learned working for Bezos, build your business around the things that won't change.
That's what we did... 3/N

A degree in #English #Language and #Linguistics definitely opens career path doors. It is an excellent synthesis of the creative and scientific. It draws together words, societies & physical sciences, develops numeracy skills & critical thinking.
I always tell prospective students and parents at uni open days and on school visits that it’s hard to think of a career in which a deep and critical understanding of language and how it works *isn’t* of value. English is a subject that opens doors. theguardian.com/education/20…

The closest thing I can think of to a truly new behavior with no immediate precedent that became popular is Amazon Echo.
People weren’t really walking around the house talking to themselves. I guess Siri existed but I don’t think (?) it was that popular.

This video was a happy accident. While waiting in a car during the Netflix shoot of my ABSTRACT episode, I drew a cyclist on the side window. Then the car started moving.

This is customer-focused science. By learning from a million hours of unlabeled speech, Alexa is getting better at dialects/accents and at handling noise. Hari, the team, and I, spent much of last year on this project. Thanks all contributors! #AlexaAI amzn.to/2FRChgh

I cannot recommend the Alexa Accelerator, powered by @techstars, highly enough. It essentially created my company. If you're a startup working in the voice space, you should absolutely apply for this.
Super excited for @aviel, @adamsbj, @rigomundo, @alexadevs!

Great story: the Amazon Echo mute button physically disconnects the microphone, because the engineering team refused to insecurely implement it in software.
Good on them for ethics, although the law should be such that unethical teams do this too.

It’s been almost a year since I joined the Voice+AI team at the BBC and what a ride it’s been! I’ve loved every minute of designing for voice.
The times are changing, but our mission remains the same.

If you want to question whether human-produced labels for training ML models represent "ground truth," look no further than the sheer volume of misclassifications in a pair of recycling/trash bins.
