LOL this is a wild fact from Gibson.
It’s cheaper to charter a Falcon 9 Rocket than a VLCC (for a far east discharge) 😅😅

Felipe gave me homework from the podcast to determine what is the tank top level for the diesel export ban scenarios. I took one step further and make a detailed mass balance brief on it, using my experience as a refinery scheduler.
1⃣Depending on how the diesel export ban/quota is framed, Sparta sees the US CDU run cuts could be as low as zero on a blanket ban of 30 days to 17% based on a 90-day export ban.
2⃣This is calculated basis diesel first drawing stocks sharply to exploit the window before the actual export ban date, then running till diesel tank top level.
3⃣There is further reprieve from utilizing mogas storage tanks as well for which there is low risk of contamination in modern tanks.
Full link to the brief and all my assumptions in the link below.

Oil is dropping but diesel refuses to follow.
Tight refining capacity and lost Middle East barrels are propping up diesel prices. A US export ban would ease inland costs but hit Gulf Coast margins, leaving the coasts exposed. Aaron Kildoww, Sparta, on @BBCNews today.

I ask Leonidas AI what would be the price impact of having a diesel export ban in the US. Here's the full response generated in 1 minute.
"The bottom line: a US diesel export ban is bullish NWE/ICE Gasoil, bearish HO, compressive on HOGO, and deepens the E/W West premium — the exact opposite of what it intends for US consumers once refiner run incentives are factored in. For Singapore, the read is modestly bullish via the swing-barrel diversion, but the primary shock lands in the Atlantic Basin."

Crude refining margin 101
The price of crude delivered to refinery = Benchmark + FOB premium + freight cost
Benchmark can be ICE Brent, Dated Brent, Nymex WTI or Dubai.
FOB premium is a factor of supply and demand, quality of crude and logistics. If that crude is red hot in demand, FOB goes up. FOB premium is also known as cash diff/differential.
Freight cost has its own supply and demand angle. Right now VLCCs are in short supply due to highly inefficient logistics caused by the war, hence the crazy valuations there.
Crude margins is then the value of the crude minus the delivered price of crude. The value of the crude is also known as gross product worth (GPW). You multiply product cracks with the yields obtained from the crude.
Each refinery values the crude differently due to unique refining configurations. They run Linear Programming (LPs) to obtain these valuations.
In the current climate, refining margin must be ≥0 since refining is short. If it goes below 0, then something in the equation needs to adjust. I.e. either FOB premium or freight goes down, or product cracks rise.
In Sparta, we model all of the above and align 90 crudes to the same delivery window for 8 refining destinations with 3 different refining configurations per region.
Hope this explains the basics of crude refining economics.

Here's the latest one.
Freight exploding, China increasing product exports better translated as an E/W view rather than Singapore crack weakening and a widening Brent-Dubai in my cards.

China's Inflection Point Could Be Here
(First published on Sparta's Market Outlook on 21 August, and point number 8 is already happening, with FOB premiums going up and eroding the cracking margins)
1⃣At least 8 mb of Basrah Medium and Basrah Heavy cargoes have been sold to Rongsheng and some state-owned Chinese refiners for prompt delivery, with Basrah Medium rumoured to be at CFR Dubai + sub 10$/bbl levels.
2⃣This is apparently in reaction to missing out on the eighth ADNOC tender (they probably tried to bid for cheaper cargoes but failed).
3⃣Pre-crisis, from Sparta’s rolling front month arbs, the delivered pricing of Basrah Medium spot cargoes was around $2/bbl lower than Oman cargoes into Far East. With Oman currently landing around Oct Dubai+$19/bbl, the pricing of Basrah Medium at CFR Dubai+$10/bbl sounds reasonable.
4⃣On the Saudi allocations front, the quantity allocated to China is now heard to be 14 mb, just 1-2 VLCCs higher than the last three months of 10-12 mb allocations. Zhenhua was heard to have been allocated as well, signalling the start-up of the 300 kb/d HAPCO refinery is imminent.
5⃣There was also 10 mb of Arab Medium and Arab Heavy crudes heard sold on a rare Saudi Aramco tender to Petrochina, Sinochem, Unipec and Rong Sheng for prompt loading.
6⃣Russian ESPO is heard to be sold out for October loaders, whilst Iranian offers are few and far between for the independent refiners.
7⃣As a result, traders are seeing more active inquiries from both state-owned players and independent refiners.
8⃣This should translate to higher achievable FOB premiums, given cracking margins are still in double digits in the Asian markets even with eye-watering freight rates.
9⃣Product exports could start creeping up around October if the crude buying pattern is sustained as well. We will of course need to hear the actual refined product export quotas to confirm.

European gasoline blending has effectively stopped. It's rewriting global flows.
E5 barges in Rotterdam are trading above +$300/mt against the October swap, an unprecedented premium. It has closed the TA arb into NYH and pushed gasoline E/W to historic lows across RBOB, EBOB and Sing92 alike.
▸ EBOB Oct/Nov backwardation of +$80/mt looks undervalued, with room to extend.
▸ PADD 1 exposure builds into September as Irving Saint John's turnaround closes EoS flows.
▸ USGC now competes directly with ARA on octane cost, with Houston fixtures moving into Morocco.

US gasoline inventories are tightening into winter.
Nikolas Plonski on the shift:
▸ EBOB spreads sell off faster than RBOB to start September.
▸ TA and AG arbs into NYH remain shut.
▸ Gulf Coast RBOB/CBOB diffs set to gains as export routes to LATAM remain favorable for Houston exporters.

The Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed since February 2026, the largest maritime trade disruption in decades.
De-escalation, or lack thereof, changed shape: a Hormuz shuttle trade, same result, increased tanker demand.
Three phases; sequencing is where the opportunities sit. Phase one: risk premium evaporates, paper sells off, played out in June. Phase two: fleet lags AG demand, tonnage in the wrong basin, rates on a tear since August. Phase three: sanctioned barrels return, shadow fleet capacity contracts.
We're in phase two now.
@SpartaFreight, Freight Commodity Owner at Sparta, maps the full sequence: what reprices first, what lags, and how long the physical squeeze takes to surface.
