Two years later, technicians discovered that several production runs had used recycled bio materials contaminated during fabrication.

The chip had spent six years monitoring his behavior. It knew which food he ordered, when he lied, how quickly his pulse changed around certain memories.

He stood there for several minutes, allowing the uncertainty to settle over him.

“Insurance status. Property class. Subscription tier. Employment ranking. The algorithm decides what can be saved and what can be sacrificed.“

The codebent synthetic whispered another thought that wasn’t hers. She let it pass.

Nobody knew exactly what contamination meant. The processors still worked.

Another vibration rolled through the structure, this one stronger. There hadn’t been a train here in fifteen years. Water rippled around his boots.

Delivery vehicles passed along the elevated roads. Shutters rattled upwards. Steam emerged from the small restaurants. The city settled into its familiar morning rhythm.

The technician was reluctant. Most customers requested upgrades. Higher resolution, faster response times, expanded tactile perception. Very few people asked to experience less. He warned her that the procedure would reduce the accuracy of her artificial senses.

She stopped beneath a broken streetlight. It was cold. Or perhaps it wasn’t. She couldn’t tell exactly.

Beneath the surface, the streets began to disappear. There she would submerge herself.

A persistent metallic taste. Muscle tremors during sleep. These were documented complications, covered by warranty and treated with a combination of immunosuppressants and firmware adjustments.

…and as you’re in a rush, just know not to go in the temple, that place is fucked up and we can’t have you going in there. Just leave any deliveries on the door step and mark it as delivered. Don’t even knock.

The city was full of things that had outlived their original purpose.

The city was too large to contemplate for long. Its scale produced a kind of fatigue. Most inhabitants preferred to concentrate on the small, manageable worlds immediately surrounding them.

The reflections made the city seem taller. Rainbow mist hues into the night sky. Across the road, a floating advertisement illuminated street with a beautiful face that nobody could afford.

Out in the open in the city I felt like that. Afraid of being watched, under the beams in the dark.

The buildings swallowed the sunlight. Between them, transparent OLEDs and mist screens flickered into life.
