A kid who explodes over a broken pencil probably isn't upset about the pencil. That's usually the top of a stack you can't see, the fight before school, the missed breakfast, the thing that happened yesterday that nobody addressed.
The reaction that looks disproportionate to you might be exactly proportionate to everything that led up to it. The same is true in a staff meeting, a parent conversation, or anywhere someone's response seems bigger than the moment in front of you.
