Crazy stuff
Around 3 million Chinese private companies face a generational handover in the next 10 years, and it‘s the founders' kids who grew up in the digital age we should probably be watching. Today, we visited a mattress factory in Foshan where the son is taking over, and he's gone all in on the brand: > built an entire museum of sleep explaining the production process > added AI point-cloud scans to match mattresses to body types > or my favourite: wrote a song about the company's history and sang it himself (yes, this was pre-AI slop; last video). Reminds me of many other new owners on TikTok rethinking online marketing. Next to highly automated consumer lines, they sell handmade mattresses filled with white horsetail hair that go for up to ¥600,000 (~€80k, second pic). Horsehair in mattresses is an old European high-end tradition. Tail hair is longer and thicker than mane, so it springs back better and lasts for decades. White hair is finer and rarer and so in part it’s about selling the idea of luxury that some people care about.

Am excited about this thesis. @opsstudiovc is looking to back folks building machines in import-dependent categories in India as the first-check in/ as part of pre-seed rounds 🙌🏾

If India wants to grow, Machine Making has to be made the most lucrative engineering branch in colleges. Indian industries need to come forward and invest in machine makers and robotics.

We must not get into thinking that only defense products will get export controlled. Wars are not just fought in battlefield. These are starting examples how economic warfare is going to act out. Stop the resources and delay the other country. Those who have resources will grow out with compounding effects and other one will play the linear catchup game. So, we must must build our own tech, promote our own tech and buy our own tech. Until we push local buying, subsidizing R&D and production won't bear significant fruit.

Back with another edition of bothering @Nithin0dha with questions. While we speak about why we do what we do at @Rainmatterin and @RainmatterOrg internally very often, felt we should share our thoughts with everyone. And if you have questions for Nithin, do send them. ♥️

A few years ago, we all sat in a conference room of our office, where @PritnRandom explained exactly how this will play out. And it has. @NaxatraLabs is an investment not just for EV, but to localise design, manufacturing and skills. Sure, Naxatra alone cannot change this. But I think the next decade of investments in innovation has to be about local innovation and alternatives for critical supply chains that we cannot bring online when we most need them. We have to get started now.
Good story. China is squeezing India's electric vehicle demand for everything it has got. India is importing everything and just can't seem to get out of the squeeze. @MorningContext
