Promotion & Relegation completely changes how communities care about their soccer clubs. Every game and season is meaningful. Without it in the US, we’re missing a key part of what makes soccer special. Look at @Wrexham_AFC. Look at Como today. We need @ProRelForUSA.

Is U.S. Soccer truly independent? Or does it still work for Major League Soccer?
With #MLS decision to abandon the Open Cup… we’re about to find out.

A lot to unpack here. Ultimately how is this allowed under USSF Pro League Standards? The trickle down impact on lower-division soccer is huge. Hurts markets across the country and undercuts the only tournament with 100+ years of history in this country.
NEW: On Friday afternoon, #MLS announced that it will have its Next Pro developmental teams participate in the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup instead of its first teams.
The league will reassess participation for future iterations next winter. Report: theathletic.com/5141003/2023…

How will they comply w/ Art.II.a.ii of US Soccer's Pro League Standards, which require DI outdoor leagues to play in all U.S. Soccer competitions for which they are eligible. Isn't the Open Cup a U.S. Soccer competition? Are they sending MLSNP rosters under the MLS teams' names?

Spoiler alert, American sports are communist.
Take the NFL as an example - the equal distribution of revenue, salary caps, worst team getting 1st draft picks, no relegation & failure is rewarded.
The US is built on the idea of meritocracy but not when it comes to sports.

Wrexham is interesting because the club is 158 years old with a proud history, and the club and town were on the ropes, and Reynolds and McIlhenny know how to craft a story.
But none of it makes sense without promotion/relegation. It is the key to the whole thing.
#ProRelForUSA ⚽️ 🇺🇸 🔺🔻 retweeted
Ask any Wrexham player, coach or owner what the #1 goal for the season is and they will tell you promotion to League Two. Ask any MLS apologist about Wrexham and they will make any excuse possible to discredit the powerful story of promotion and relegation. Every time.

The idea of promotion/relegation being the only thing that added a sense of jeopardy to the documentary is ridiculous. Fighting to make the playoffs, cup runs, or league rivalries are just a few possible compelling on-field aspects to MLS

Never imagined, 30th Anniversary of the J. League would be celebrated with both Professional Clubs from Shizuoka playing in the J. League, 2nd Division. Both relegated in the same season. Promotion/Relegation keeps Clubs accountable and levels the playing field, literally.

Like @WrexhamFX? Falling in love with @Wrexham_AFC?
Did you know there is (likely) a local level club near you to actually, viscerally support? And yes, I mean going to matches, eatin' scran & buyin' proper club gear!
If you don't know how or where to look, please ask me.
