I wrote a long law review essay about why proportional representation is essential for successful multiracial multiethnic democracy. The tldr: winner-take-all political systems are really bad for diverse societies. Two-party systems are bad for minorities.

At the end of the day, #ProportionalRepresentation performs quite well.
If you want things done fast, go with a one-party system (e.g., China, or even the US right now). If you want things done according to how the people actually want them done, go with a multi-party system.

I'm almost certain it won't be a single third party that emerges, but rather a new electoral system that allows multiple parties to gain representation and form coalitions.
And yes, it does start to feel inevitable. More polling: newamerica.org/insights/prop…
There are all sorts of procedural and legal reasons why the U.S. has been a two-party country for so long, and I'm not convinced that the rise of a successful third party is imminent, but ...
Well, let's put it this way: If and when a successful third party emerges in the next decade, people are going to pass around graphs like this in a "lol this is the most obvious development in modern political history" kind of way

Proportional representation is "an opportunity to kind of reset and kind of reimagine." marylandmatters.org/2026/09/…
Surveys show voters are interested in options beyond the two major parties. But our single-choice, winner-take-all elections discourage new parties from participating.
Proportional representation can put the U.S. on a path to multi-party democracy. ⬇️

💥BREAKING: Andy Burnham announces a National Commission on Electoral Reform.
This is a historic moment. The era of First Past the Post is coming to an end.
It's time to transform politics and make all votes count. It's time for Proportional Representation.

We're proud to sign in support of the hugely important congressional modernization effort.
Congressional Modernization Lives!!
Earlier this summer @HouseAdmin @HouseAdm_Dems launched a portal to collect ideas for future congressional modernization efforts. Many groups and individuals internal and external to Congress contributed, yielding 200 submissions!! 1/3

To get #ProportionalRepresentation at the federal level, you would indeed need to repeal that 1967 federal law banning it.
But nothing stops cities and states from using it. We're working on the California state legislature. Several US cities including Portland *already* use PR.

Working class Americans deserve proportional representation
“Of the 919 candidates running as major-party nominees for the US House and Senate this November, only seven had a working-class job when they got into politics.”
Nick Carnes and I explain why working-class people are numerically underrepresented.

"Some commentators have observed that states with the best response to coronavirus so far are those with women leaders. The underlying factor is that these are countries with Proportional Representation and a focus on pluralistic decision making." - @wendychambLD
There's a real cost to the gerrymandering wars. Congress is less accountable, elections are harder to run, and voters are more frustrated.
The solution? Multi-member districts with proportional representation.

Proportional representation would make it easier for "people to participate in our political system authentically."
What would it take to restore faith in American democracy? @chavezlinda’s latest guest on the Older/Wiser podcast, Jennifer Dresden @protctdemocracy, has one answer: proportional representation. But is it realistic? Tune into the latest episode to find out!

Seems like now would be a good time for Congress to flex its Article I, Section IV powers & require all states to elect their congressional delegations through proportional representation, thus rendering gerrymandering irrelevant.

"Post-Callais: here’s the fairest way to realize 'representation for all'”
The magic of multi-seat districts elected by proportional representation (PR) would create a Congress that reflects the great diversity of America.
democracysos.substack.com/p/…
Democrats, Republicans, white, black, brown, women, men, all would win fair representation no matter where they live and without gerrymandering. PR would lean into America's strength, instead of the nation being forever and bitterly divided. What are we waiting for?
