As a writer I have what my agent kindly calls ‘a modest platform’. Those with a hugely immodest one now need to stand up against the privatisation of @britishlibrary We need a very loud and persistent voice against it. Think what the French would do. This can not stand.

Important thread - especially the point about e tempting gay men from challenge about their sexual practices. All abuse/exploitation of children matters
1./ 🧵Stephen Fry and Britain's Failure to Take Child Abuse Seriously. Our headlines are dominated by the scandal of institutions that refused to protect girls for fear of seeming "racist". My latest article suggests Stephen Fry's knighthood is from the same copybook. 1/of 21

🇺🇸 BEING AN ASSHOLE DIDN'T HELP... One of the most satisfying surprises of the American elections was the defeat of Vivek Ramaswamy, the former presidential candidate, billionaire, Trump ally, and one of the most repulsive figures in the MAGA movement. He lost Ohio's gubernatorial election to 60-year-old Amy Acton, a physician and former director of the state's Department of Health. And this happened in Ohio, where Trump had won three consecutive presidential elections and where Democrats had not won a gubernatorial election since 2006. Acton became the first woman elected governor of the state, despite more than $100 million spent by her opponents on the campaign. Ramaswamy is well known to Ukrainians. He promised to completely end American military assistance to Ukraine, hand over a significant part of Donbas to Russia, permanently close Ukraine's path to NATO, and lift sanctions against the Kremlin. All of this in exchange for Putin's promise to abandon military cooperation with China. He insisted that Ukraine was not a democracy, spread accusations of Nazism, and claimed that American support for Ukraine was only pushing Russia into China's arms. Ramaswamy hoped to negotiate a new world order with Putin, effectively offering Ukrainian territory as payment for the deal. But Ramaswamy's moral character was revealed most clearly during his own election campaign. Amy Acton survived sexual abuse by her stepfather during childhood. Her mother stayed with the man, while Amy herself experienced homelessness as a child. And then Ramaswamy tracked down his opponent's mother, with whom Acton had reportedly had no contact for nearly half a century, and filmed a campaign advertisement in which the mother called her daughter a liar and urged voters not to support her. The advertisement provoked outrage even among Republicans, but Ramaswamy continued defending it. Trump and Vance also sided with him. In the end, Amy Acton won, and Ramaswamy conceded defeat. A woman who survived childhood abuse, poverty, and homelessness defeated a billionaire who tried to weaponize one of the most painful chapters of her life against her. And now, for the first time in twenty years, Ohio will have a Democratic governor. mykhailorohoza.substack.com

Replying to @SonnyTLoughran
I'm concerned that you're cherry-picking the evidence here. Other longitudinal studies *do* find that use of pornography contributes to later perpetration of sexual violence, such as these below. Whereas you've focused on one study that did not.

This is the first of three briefings based on my research into bail use from the perspective of women subjected to rape @LessCrime @DannyShawNews @BBCWomansHour @LDNVictimsComm @ProfLizKelly No-one in policy or research has ever asked victims if bail works for them before.
Important research from Dr Sarah Learmonth, highlighting the gaps between promised protections and the reality of bail for rape survivors. Survivor safety must remain a priority throughout.

Real radical feminism is pro-women and anti-racist, as Redstockings stated in 1969: "We identify with all women. We define our best interest as that of the poorest, most brutally exploited woman. We repudiate all economic, racial, educational or status privileges that divide us from other women." And we detest apartheid, religious or racialized, and ethno-nationalist supremacism, whether by Hamas or by the far-better-armed IDF, and exterminationist rhetoric.

Threats, largely on social media, against “high office holders” have been ramping up. Women in politics are particularly scared. Just this month, a research report identified 138 women parliamentarians from 22 European countries who were depicted in, or associated with, deepfake pornography, compared with only nine men. You can find the same pattern in Pakistan, the US and Bolivia. Where women speak, online abuse follows. fullerproject.org/the-cost-o…

BREAKING: Billionaire Sir Richard Branson unleashes a SCORCHING attack on Trump and his disgusting cozying up to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. This is EXACTLY the kind of thing that gets under Trump's skin... "I thought I’d never have to say this in my lifetime, but this is 2026, and sadly nothing is what it used to be," Branson, the founder of Virgin Group, wrote on LinkedIn. "The Trump administration has become an appeaser to autocrats and dictators, putting their personal whims before the best interests of the American people and those of the free world. What is it about Putin that President Trump fawns over?" "How will America’s allies ever be able to trust this administration again when they are now turning against them at a time of war and suffering?" he asked. Trump has repeatedly betrayed our Ukrainian allies in recent days. First, he announced a stunning deal with Putin to allow millions of barrels of diesel into the global markets, a move that will directly pump money into the Russian war machine. Then, he began a concerted smear campaign against President Zelenskyy and said that Putin is easier to deal with. The backstabbing escalated when Washington failed to provide its usual early warning to Kyiv of an incoming Russian ballistic missile attack. Now, it appears that the White House ordered a temporary disruption of Starshield, a military version of Elon Musk's Starlink that the Ukrainian armed forces rely upon. "The slowdown of Starlink/Starshield and the inexplicable lack of advance warning of Russian missile launches have already caused Ukrainian civilians to die unnecessarily," wrote Branson. "How much worse can it get?" "If one thing is clear it’s that European leaders must overcome the initial shock about Trump’s recent actions and step up to the plate. It’s as much about Europe’s freedom as it is about Ukraine’s sovereignty. Both are worth fighting for," he continued. "All options should be on the table now, from the transfer of frozen Russian assets to Ukraine to the delivery of advanced weapons systems such as Germany’s Taurus." "Why oh why is this happening? We cannot let the free world be dismantled before our very eyes," Branson concluded. We couldn't agree more. Trump is an enemy to Ukraine, an enemy to democracy, and an enemy to the American people. When Democrats retake power, we have our work cut out for us. Every last trace of this monstrous man's legacy must be erased. Please ❤️ and share if you think that Trump is Putin's puppet!

"Consenting to snort white powder is not consenting to be gang raped for seven hours." The law is not on women's side, surprise. "Basically, the law says if a victim took drugs or alcohol willingly, they’re not legally incapacitated so consent is assumed. Basically, it makes rape legal. That’s so screwed up it’s sickening. Laws should not make rape legal. "That is why New York lawmakers and organizations like RAINN are pushing for bills like Senate Bill S10632 to change the law to focus on whether the victim was too impaired to consent, instead of whether they agreed to take the drugs." substack.com/home/post/p-218…

Substantial proportions of men engage in violent and abusive behaviour towards women, including acts that meet legal definitions of crime. E.g., 29.3% of male college students in North America have perpetrated sexual assault. Yet very few receive any kind of formal sanction. 1/7

This is 17 yr old Jeremiah Carnegie from London. He realised that local families couldn't afford swimming lessons for their kids. So, he went to the bosses of the pool and proposed the idea of running a free, two-week swimming course. The result: 780 kids signed up!
