Special interests do not lobby the people. They purchase the process that claims to speak for them. Ballot measures were sold as direct democracy. In practice they are a paid-signature and advertising machine. Professional circulators collect the names. Organized groups supply 70 to 90 percent of the money. Dark money networks and foreign-backed funds drop tens of millions on abortion, wages, and election rules. Gig companies spent over $200 million to rewrite labor law at the ballot. The median voter never writes the language or funds the campaign. The side with the checkbook sets the agenda and frames the choice. Voters still mark the box. Mob rule ensues. That does not make the agenda the will of the people. It makes the agenda the will of whoever can afford to place it there. The Constitution established a republic with elected representatives, separation of powers, and barriers against pure majority rule—not a mechanism for citizens to draft and pass statutes by popular vote.

The Tolerance paradox — Karl popper 1945. Tolerance can Tolerate decent, provided that the intolerant can be met with argument. If the intolerant become violent or forceful, then a tolerance line must be drawn.
