Missouri's sports betting ballot measure vote totals continue to narrow; if it falls within a permitted recount threshold and "yes" is still up, I don't expect the "no" camp to challenge; if, in the unlikely event it flips to "no", I would expect supporters to push a recount

While I have long maintained that CA is the most legally vulnerable state for sweepstakes casinos, there may be a new leader in the clubhouse – Florida. The new laws that were passed in 2013 to prohibit internet cafés left a dangerous wake for their cyber successors. A thread:🧵

Texas Lt Gov Dan Patrick says only 3 or 4 Senate Republicans support a constitutional amendment authorizing Texas casinos. Wanting 15 or 16 Republicans to support a bill before he moves it, Patrick doesn’t expect Senate to give casinos a hearing in 2025.playusa.com/texas-casino-leg…

Reached out to @DLHoskins, the longtime opponent of Missouri sports betting (that didn’t also legalize VLTs), and the next Missouri Secretary of State, to get his thoughts on the approval. “I look forward to placing my first bet that the Chiefs will win the Super Bowl,” he said.

The CT lawsuit vs. VGW shines a spotlight on the hoops and hurdles a consumer has to clear just to redeem prizes -- i.e., minimum permitted withdrawal amounts (50 SC), limits on # of redemptions, "weeks long" approval delays, etc.. It's almost as if they want you to keep playing.
NEW: A Connecticut resident has sued sweepstakes casino operator VGW in Hartford Superior Court, alleging that VGW operates an illegal gambling platform and induced plaintiff to continue gambling and playing casino games by establishing onerous redemption restrictions.

God speed Teri Garr. Her mere presence in any film just made everything better. An absolute brilliant wit made her one of the greatest comedic actors.

Or maybe not. In 10+ federal cases dating back to last year, not once has VGW put its cards on the table and explained why its sweepstakes are not illegal gambling. In its most recent motion to dismiss, VGW dodged the "gambling" question entirely. Expect more of the same.
VGW's forthcoming motion to dismiss will be the first U.S. court filing to articulate its case for why the dual currency sweepstakes format -- in which the gaming transaction is split up into 2 steps (buy virtual coin + get free sweeps entries & play 🎰 for $) -- is not gambling.

Activity picking up in Georgia federal class action lawsuit vs. sweepstakes casino operator VGW: 1) A motion for class certification has been filed; 2) VGW says motion to dismiss is "forthcoming"; 3) Court grants motion to stay discovery for 30 days following ruling on MTD.
