In SS3, I started betting for the first time because I really wanted a phone. Being in boarding school, I used to sneak out to place bets. When it was time for JAMB, they gave me ₦6,000 for the registration. I held onto the money for a while. Then one Tuesday, I got the idea to stake it on 6 odds. My plan was simple: if i won, I’d keep the ₦6k and use the winnings to buy the phone. I sneaked out and staked on Barcelona, Villarreal, Manchester City, and Dortmund to win. The next day, I checked the results with my friend’s phone and everything entered. I sneaked out again, excited to cash the ticket. When I got there, they told me it didn’t enter. I was confused until I checked properly — Dortmund won 3-2, but their third goal came in extra time,(my anger is that it was a second division team) so the bet was void On my way back to school, the school authorities caught me. They flogged me and almost expelled me. I later called my mum and lied to her, telling her the money had been stolen. Because money had been disappearing from my hands around that period, she came to school. After some questioning she gave me a beating, and paid for the JAMB registration herself
