VIC Govt says reducing land tax will deliver cost-of-living relief. But for renters & home buyers, cheaper landholding means more pressure as property investment becomes more attractive.
As we told Yahoo! Finance we should replace stamp duty ➡️ land tax.
au.finance.yahoo.com/news/la…
This may be good politics, but it's a terrible approach to state finances.
We need to shift taxes off work and onto land. @AustralianLabor used to understand this. What happened?
If you want to help fix taxes and affordability, swap stamp duty for land tax.
If you want to support affordable housing, remove speculation from the market and the best way to do that is to tax land. In VIC, it's working.
FHBers entering the market at record levels. Investors building new houses instead of buying existing ones. Prices are stable.
This is not tax reform. It is tax retreat.
It is a betrayal of working Victorians to make it cheaper to hold valuable land while leaving taxes on work, enterprise and moving house in place.

I'm looking forward to giving the President's address at tonight's dinner, 136 years since Henry George visited Australia and there's never been a more urgent need for Georgist economics to prevail!
Tonight we gather for our 135th Annual Henry George Commemorative Address.
As we reflect on this quote, we must ask ourselves: what's changed?

Congratulations to the @RadxChange team for this fantastic research that highlights a critically important fact: as a society, we agree much more than we disagree. Policy disagreements almost always come down to the details.
We partnered with AMPLIFY Australia to put ⿻ plural tech to the test on one of the most entrenched debates in Australian public life: Sydney's density fight. Beyond NIMBY vs YIMBY, what we found is that even the most engaged partisans hold conditions the other side can meet.

"But the figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveal the drop is concentrated among investors looking to buy an existing home, with loans for the construction of new properties actually increasing."
So it's working?

A lot of chat about the fact that state treasurers are going to get nervouis about falling stamp duty and they are. But, given what has already been done if the federal government wanted to leave a positive legacy they would work with the states now to scrap stamp duty and replace it with a land tax. That would actually be a really positive taxation change.
Vacancy is the problem. But a vacancy tax was never going to solve it.
New data show 100s of property owners caught dodging the VRLT, while our research shows more than 100k vacant/underused Melb homes.
A broad-based land tax is a simple, permanent way to put land to use.
