Can the Amazon rainforest become a source of carbon instead of absorbing it? The Amazon has long acted as a major carbon sink, but its role in the global carbon cycle is changing. First, understand two important terms: • Carbon Sink: An ecosystem that absorbs more carbon dioxide than it releases. Forests absorb CO₂ through photosynthesis and store carbon in trees and soil. • Carbon Source: An ecosystem that releases more carbon than it absorbs, adding to atmospheric CO₂. Why is the Amazon changing? Deforestation, forest degradation, rising temperatures and prolonged droughts are weakening its ability to absorb carbon. Wildfires further release the carbon stored in vegetation. A study published in Nature on 21 October 2026 found that the Amazon had become a net carbon source over the 2010–2024 study period, with fires playing a major role. Why does this matter? 1. More CO₂ in the atmosphere intensifies global warming. 2. Reduced forest cover disrupts rainfall and regional water cycles. 3. Increasing droughts and fires can further weaken forest ecosystems. The concern is not just the loss of trees. It is the weakening of one of the world’s major natural climate regulators.

UNCLOS: The international law that governs the world’s oceans. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), adopted in 1982, is often described as the Constitution of the Oceans. But its significance goes far beyond defining maritime boundaries. Here are 4 lesser-known aspects of this international treaty: 1. It recognises the international seabed beyond national jurisdiction as the “Common Heritage of Mankind”. 2. It provides landlocked countries with a legal framework for access to and from the sea. 3. It establishes obligations for countries to protect and preserve the marine environment. 4. It provides mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of maritime disputes, including through ITLOS and arbitration. UNCLOS essentially attempts to balance national interests, freedom of navigation and the collective interests of the international community. But can you distinguish between the rights a country exercises in its Territorial Sea and its Exclusive Economic Zone

US MIDTERM ELECTIONS 2026 The United States is heading towards a crucial political test on November 3, 2026. Unlike presidential elections, US Midterm Elections do not elect a new President. Instead, they determine the balance of power in the US Congress, halfway through the President’s four-year term. Why are they important? 1. Control of Congress: All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 Senate seats are up for election. 2. Checks and Balances: A shift in congressional control can strengthen legislative oversight of the President and influence the passage of key laws. 3. Foreign Policy: The results could shape debates on US trade policy, defence spending, international conflicts and diplomatic relations. 4. Domestic Politics: Issues such as inflation, immigration, healthcare and the economy can influence the electoral outcome. Why does it matter globally? A change in congressional control can affect the direction of American domestic and foreign policy, with consequences extending far beyond US borders. One election. Two chambers. A potential shift in the balance of political power.

One habit that can significantly improve your UPSC preparation: MAINTAIN AN ERROR NOTEBOOK. Every time you get a question wrong, don’t just check the correct answer. Find out WHY you got it wrong. Ask yourself: • Was my concept unclear? • Did I forget an important fact? • Did I misread the question? • Did I fall for a confusing option? Note down the mistake, understand the correct concept and revisit it during revision. Remember: Your mistakes are not wasted attempts if you learn from them. Don’t just track how many questions you get right. Track why you get them wrong. #UPSCPreparation #UPSC2027 #PrelimsStrategy
