Traces of Texas reader Robert Sorenson kindly sent in this photo of Waylon Jennings with legendary WBAP "Midnight Cowboy" dee jay Bill Mack. Robert said "I saw the photo of Bill Mack with Charley Pride and Merle Haggard and thought I'd send this in. This could be an entry in the most Texas photo of all time." I agree, Robert.
I have a ton of great Bill Mack stories. Here's one: In the days before cellphones, women would call Bill's show with messages for their husbands ---- truck drivers somewhere out on America's highways ---- because Bill's after dark radio show covered most of the U.S. and because it had a huge trucker audience. Sometimes the news was that a baby had arrived. Bill would broadcast the announcement, hoping the father was listening. He consequently acquired another nickname: the "Midnight Midwife."
Thank you, Robert. This is super duper. I can't believe I've never seen it before.

🇦🇪🇺🇦🇷🇺 A RUSSIAN AND A UKRAINIAN SAVED THE DAY
After much confusion, it turns out a Ukrainian and a Russian pilot were on board the FlyDubai plane.
Both took control of the plane and landed it after the second pilot attacked the captain.
Both are pilots who were flying as regular passengers in civilian clothes. After the incident, they replaced the crew in the cockpit and landed the plane.
Russians and Ukrainians work together… a much better end to this story!

Mystras was a Byzantine city in the Peloponnese that only surrendered to the Turks in 1460 – making it, in a way, the last European remnant of the Roman Empire.
It remained inhabited until the nineteenth century, but by the twentieth century it had become an extraordinarily atmospheric ruin, a dead city on a mountaintop. I visited as a boy and thought it one of Europe's most underrated sites.
It has since become even more interesting. Over several decades, the Greeks have rebuilt the great Byzantine palace, which was finished earlier this year. The ruins were extensive enough that historians could reconstruct with some confidence, meaning that it now affords a unique experience of Byzantine secular architecture.

Today’s failed procedural vote on the CLARITY Act reflects the broader dysfunction of our government institutions.
Both sides will point fingers, but neither will accept responsibility. Republicans and Democrats have had years to negotiate and find a path forward.
Instead, what we got was political theater—politicians more interested in putting on a show and scoring points against the other side than doing the hard work of legislating.
A house divided cannot stand. Today, it failed to move forward.
I’m not worried about the crypto industry - we will be fine.
I’m worried about the future of our country—and what happens when a government can no longer come together to serve the people it represents.

if you are in north beach, make the stop at caffe trieste, the closest thing to time travel san francisco has.
in 1947, istria stopped being italy. the peninsula was handed to communist yugoslavia, italian homes were nationalized, and 300,000 italians packed up and left. giovanni giotta, a fisherman from rovigno, was one of them.
he ended up in san francisco - the one city in america where an italian fisherman wasn't a stranger. north beach spoke italian, the wharf was full of italian fishing boats, and saints peter and paul church took his family in.
later on giovanni washed windows for a living, and sang opera while he worked. they called him "the singing window washer." in 1956 he opened caffe trieste, named for the port city of the coast he'd lost. it was the first espresso bar on the west coast. their jukebox still plays opera, and they still accept cash only.
then the world came to him. coppola wrote the godfather at the back table. kerouac, ginsberg, ferlinghetti were regulars. every saturday since 1971 the family hosts a free three-hour concert. the nobel poet joseph brodsky wrote about it: "nothing has changed here. neither the furniture nor the weather." 70 years on, that was always the point.
trieste on 35mm, i've shot last year:

The indefatigable Katherine Hepburn sits among the wreckage of her family home, Old Saybrook, Connecticut, in 1938. The waterfront house had been hit by a category 5 hurricane on September 21st. Hepburn recalled: “God, it was something devastating and unreal, like the beginning of the world–or the end of it. I slogged and sloshed, crawled through ditches and hung on to keep going somehow. I got drenched and bruised and scratched and finally got to where there was a working phone and called Dad.”
