“Why must migrant fishers pay a large sum of money up front just to work in South Korea? And what kind of hardships do they have to endure on board a fishing vessel because of the debt they’ve taken on before they’ve even started working?” @newstapa and @JARING_ met 7 Indonesian migrant fishers who have worked or are currently working on South Korean fishing vessels. All of them came to South Korea after paying substantial recruitment fees and a security deposit, which serves to tie them from leaving their jobs. Some endured harsh labor conditions and violence on board. They were forced to perform tasks not specified in their contracts and were sometimes dismissed unilaterally. What exactly happened? In Part 4, we present the vivid testimonies of the crew members, including Abdurrohim. **This series was produced in collaboration with @JARING_ with the support of @pulitzercenter . 📷Watch the video for more details: youtu.be/F_pGHSENquk 📷Read the article: newstapa.org/article/JykxA

I have a new Long Read in The Guardian about the trials & imprisonment of three pirates in my now-antiquated case. I dismantle the idea of "Stockholm Syndrome" and explain why it isn't the same as forgiveness.

Jacob Pennington used to drink his well water. The 32-year-old environmental health specialist stopped doing so around three years ago when it started to taste foul. Now he fills up jugs at work because the public system water there isn’t metallic or salty like what his home supply has become. “It sucks for just cleaning, cooking,” Pennington said in the kitchen of his Elk River Road home in this tiny, unincorporated community in rural Clay County. Pennington’s water supply causes too much damage to be written off as merely a nuisance. It leaves rust- to orange-colored stains on his sinks, shower and appliances within days of Pennington cleaning them. Editor's note: This report was supported by the @pulitzercenter and is part of a Gazette-Mail series on drinking water quality in West Virginia. 🗞️FULL STORY: bit.ly/4jEUrGz

Big Tech is quietly reshaping Kenya’s public services and infrastructure through secret agreements the public can't see. Worse, Laws are being rewritten to make it easier for them to operate and shield them from local litigation. What is much harder to find is who negotiated these arrangements, what Kenya agreed to in return, and who is checking whether they serve the public interest. If the government rewrites the rules to shield foreign tech giants from local litigation, who is left to protect the Kenyan citizens whose lives and labor fuel these platforms? @pulitzercenter @agenciapublica @thecontinent Read: theelephant.info/investigati…

When an outsourcing company facing workers in court took its problem to Kenya's president, William Ruto later declared: “We have changed the law.” That's one piece of a much bigger story. We traced at least 12 engagements between Kenya's government and some of the world's biggest technology companies. These agreements and details of who negotiated them remain out of public view. Our investigation into Big Tech's growing reach inside the Kenyan state. @pulitzercenter @agenciapublica @thecontinent_ theelephant.info/investigati…
