I’ve been sitting with Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors this week and I couldn’t stop seeing Manchester United and Old Trafford in it.
Bear with me.
For those who haven’t read it, the play is about two sets of identical twins, both named Antipholus and both with a servant named Dromio, separated at birth by a shipwreck.
They end up in the same city, Ephesus, and for five acts nobody knows who anyone really is. Masters beat the wrong servants, wives lock out the wrong husbands, merchants demand money from the wrong man.
Everyone is absolutely convinced they are right, and everyone is completely wrong. It’s chaos born from mistaken identity.
That is Manchester United right now.
We lost 3-0 to Bournemouth at home yesterday. At home. That puts us on 7 points, 16th in the league, one point above the relegation zone and eight games without a win.
Four days earlier we lost 4-1 to Como 1907 in the Champions League. The reports this morning are all the same, Carrick facing the axe, board speeding up the search for a successor, Bruno dropped from the starting XI.
And the whole thing feels like a Shakespearean identity crisis.
Who are we? Are we the Manchester United that finished third last season and started this season talking about a rebuild finally having credibility? Or are we the Manchester United that can’t beat Leeds, loses to Atletico, loses to Bournemouth, and looks like two completely different teams in the same shirt?
Like Antipholus of Syracuse and Antipholus of Ephesus, we have two Uniteds walking around in identical kits. One is the club we think we are in press conferences and on paper.
The other is the club everyone else sees on the pitch, confused, ill-disciplined, arguing over who owes what to whom.
In the play, everyone keeps punishing the wrong person. Adriana scolds the wrong Antipholus for being a bad husband. Angelo arrests the wrong man for debt. That’s exactly what we’re doing right now.
We blame Carrick one week, the players the next, the board after that. We’re beating the wrong Dromio every single week because we can’t figure out which twin is actually causing the mess.
The funniest, and saddest part of The Comedy of Errors is that the chaos goes on for so long because nobody stops to ask the simplest question - “Wait, are you who I think you are?”.
We’ve spent three years since Ten Hag doing the same thing. New manager, same question unanswered. We keep acting like the grand, imperial United of Ephesus when we are, in reality, the shipwrecked, lost United of Syracuse trying to find our brother.
Shakespeare only fixes it in Act 5 when the Abbess, basically the only adult in the room lines both sets of twins up next to each other and forces everyone to look. The errors end when the illusion ends.
That’s what we need. Not another sacking that swaps one Antipholus for the other and hopes no one notices.
We need someone to line up the two identities of this club, the myth and the reality and be honest about which one showed up against Bournemouth.
Until then, we’re just living Act 1 to 4 on loop.

Peter Schmeichel played for Sporting Lisbon, Aston Villa and Manchester City AFTER leaving Man United. YET he still refers to Manchester United as "WE".
That is what this club does to you...

Those fairweather fans asking for Carrick's head, ask yourselves - How come Sir Alex Ferguson NEVER LOST the dressing room at Man United?
"No player could ever be bigger than the manager" that's what Sir Alex mentioned in his Harvard leadership lectures.
NO PLAYER!!!
Carrick is NOT leaving anytime soon. If I were in his shoes, here's what I would do going forward:
- Promote up to four players from the reserves to the first team - one right-back, one left-back, and two central midfielders.
- Sell Bruno Fernandes (he's never playing for Man United again as long as I'm gaffer) and Lisandro Martinez (hasn't had one good game for United in over a year) in January.
- Drop other high earners who fail to perform for three consecutive matches and replace them with players from the reserves.

And many still think we are suffering because Marcus Rashford came back

Is Peter Schmeichel right to call out Erik ten Hag, or does he have a point about Manchester United’s hierarchy? 🔴
Schmeichel has hit back at Ten Hag after the Dutchman criticised United’s ownership and revealed he wanted Harry Kane and Declan Rice during his time at Old Trafford.
He believes Ten Hag should reflect on his own shortcomings rather than reopen old wounds, pointing to the players he signed and his subsequent dismissal by Bayer Leverkusen after just three games.
In my view, both sides deserve scrutiny. Ten Hag had his flaws, but United’s problems run deeper than one manager
Is Ten Hag stirring the pot, or is he simply saying what went wrong behind the scenes at United?

BARCELONA FANS ARE THE BIGGEST HYPOCRITES IN FOOTBALL. 📌
Here’s a perfect example.
A Liverpool fan, “LFCPraise,” called Lamine Yamal the “face of failure” at 19. A Barcelona fan, “playwithtomide,” replied, “Your bio says father of three reputable kids, loving husband, yet you call someone else’s son a face of failure.”
Football fans decided to check this guy’s page and found a truckload of evidence of him repeatedly calling Cristiano Ronaldo a failure, unprovoked! So I am wondering if Ronaldo fell from the sky or isn’t he someone’s son? 🤔
Gbacelona fans make it so easy for others to dislike their club and their players. In my books if it’s perfectly fine to call Ronaldo a failure because he didn’t win the World Cup then calling Yamal a failure because he didn’t win the Ballon d’Or is perfectly okay. With all that PR , hype and bragging, Yamal should have won it!
Yamal is a good talent but PR Coolers need to take it easy because the way some of you are moving is making people dislike the boy.
Imagine disrespecting Ronaldo that can buy Yamal and the entire Barcelona squad only to turn around and demand respect and protection for Yamal. You must be a very big 🤡.
We will not tolerate that nonsense some of you pulled with Messi FC vs Yamal FC . Y’all shouldn’t even bring it near Ronaldo at all. Shameless fanbase 🤡

YES! Beckham has nailed it.
Manchester United is OUR club and it's time to bring it back to the top. Back the manager and make the right decisions, enough is enough!
Listen to him use "WE" during the interview... this is the right man to run our great club.
🗣️ David Beckham: “I believe I know the right people to take Manchester United back to the top, we've had enough and we say enough is enough, the glazers family it's time for them to leave the club to other people, it's not their property the club belongs to all of us. I may want to own the club as well 😆. we want the noise to go away and the decision to be made for the Coach also"

Readers added context they thought people might want to know
David Beckham did not say this. The post fabricates and mixes phrases from his 2023 interviews while adding invented claims.
