CHINA IS WEAPONIZING QUANTUM.
ITS MILITARY SAYS MORE THAN 10 QUANTUM CYBER WEAPONS ARE ALREADY IN DEVELOPMENT.
In January, China’s state science newspaper revealed that a supercomputing lab inside the PLA’s National University of Defense Technology is building more than 10 experimental quantum cyberwarfare tools. Several have already been tested in front-line missions.
Their stated job: pull high value intelligence out of the open internet.
China has been building toward this for years. In 2017, its Micius satellite sent entangled photons to ground stations 1,200 km apart, a world first. In August, Pan Jianwei’s team entangled two quantum memories across 420 km of fiber, a new record.
Then there’s sensing, Chinese researchers have claimed a quantum radar that can spot stealth jets (we believe that it's totally propaganda), put quantum magnetometers on drones to hunt submarines, and are racing to build navigation that can’t be jammed.
Stealth jets, Submarines, GPS, everyone targets an advantage the US military depends on.
The US is moving too, a June executive order told the Pentagon to pick at least three next-generation quantum sensor projects and get them in the field by September 2028.
Who’s ahead in quantum warfare, the US or China?

LOCKHEED MARTIN JUST BUILT A QUANTUM CENTER TO WEAPONIZE THE TECHNOLOGY
Lockheed launched the Quantum Innovation Center, a single hub for quantum research, development, and prototypes across the company. The stated model is its AI Center, which they opened twenty years ago and now credits with putting AI into national security systems. Lockheed is telling you it thinks quantum is where AI was back then.
The company has been at this longer than most people know. It bought the first commercial quantum computer ever sold, a D-Wave system, in 2011, and has run quantum navigation, communications, and sensing programs for fifteen years. The new center pulls all of it together, plus the outside pieces. Lockheed Martin Ventures, just expanded to a $1 billion fund, with $100 million earmarked for UK and European quantum, and a Swiss hub with IBM at ETH Zurich anchored by Switzerland's first IBM quantum computer. Two internal programs, a talent pipeline and a fund for employee R&D projects, are there to grow the workforce, which is the part a prime only builds when it plans to ship something.
The priority list is the tell, sensing, navigation and timing, then computing. A defense contractor's quantum center leads with the sensors. That matches everything else this month, the Pentagon's Farseer program, the GPS-free Pacific flight, the DARPA helicopter program Lockheed is the platform partner for, and Lockheed's own venture stake in the quantum camera startup Diffraqtion and their partnerships with companies like @qctrlHQ and $IONQ.

Quantinuum has achieved a major industry breakthrough that solves a critical error-correction bottleneck and validates our path to delivering a fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029.
We’ve announced a new world record for quantum error correction, achieving 99.9995% logical fidelity on our Helios commercial quantum computer using our error-correction architecture.
Equivalent to just five errors in a million operations, the result is 10× better than our previous record achieved just last month and 100× better than the best published result on any other hardware modality.
The study also demonstrated a record 12× reduction in logical errors as code distance increased, a critical step toward scalable fault tolerance.
These successive breakthroughs using different codes on the same commercial hardware demonstrate how Quantinuum's flexible error-correction architecture and highly accurate trapped-ion technology work together to enable exponential improvements in accuracy, with performance now within the target range for Apollo, our first universal fault-tolerant quantum computer planned for 2029.

THE US GOVERNMENT IS BUILDING QUANTUM'S FOUNDRIES NOW TO DOMINATE LATER.
The biggest checks in quantum went to foundries this year, and we believe this is a bigger development than most give it credit before because it will shape the entire industry.
IBM: $1 billion from the Commerce Department, the largest quantum award in history, to launch a foundry subsidiary for quantum grade superconducting wafers, building on its lead in superconducting fabrication.
GlobalFoundries: $375 million to establish a secure, domestic quantum foundry serving five modalities at once, superconducting, trapped ion, photonic, topological, and silicon spin.
IonQ: Paid $1.8 billion for SkyWater, the only US pure-play Trusted foundry, closed in July, and had a co-built machine on stage by September. The stated logic was owning the fab pulls the roadmap forward, cuts development by months.
For decades quantum was a physics race, and physics races reward hand built qubits. Once error correction was proven, the question flipped to "can you make a hundred thousand of them," and that's a manufacturing question. Ion traps are now chips, Spin qubits are transistors, Photonic qubits are waveguides. All these modalities routes through a fab.
That scarcity splits the sector in two.
Companies that own or control fabrication: IBM and IonQ
Anchored at a fab: PsiQuantum and Quantum Motion, with dedicated processes at GlobalFoundries' government funded line. Better than renting, still someone else's building.
Companies that rent it wait in line at someone else's foundry, at someone else's priority. When the fab is full, their roadmap slips.

THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY IS PUTTING $215 MILLION ON THE FIRST FAULT TOLERANT QUANTUM COMPUTER.
JUST IN, the Genesis Q Competition. DOE will pay private companies up to $215M to deliver the world's first scientifically relevant fault tolerant quantum computer. Not a grant but a prize with a scoreboard.
The criteria is at least 100 logical qubits running hundreds of millions of fault tolerant operations. Phase I gives each entrant up to $1.5M. Phase II unlocks a $100M pool at 100 logical qubits, with $50M bonuses at 150 and 200.
The government just set the finish line at double the world record and posted cash at every milestone past it.
DOE's Under Secretary Darío Gil, formerly IBM's research chief, frames the first faulttolerant machine around 2028.
Applications are due October 19, every company with a fault-tolerance roadmap now has to put its logical qubit claims in front of DOE's physicists, for money, with a deadline.
THE US WANTS A QUANTUM COMPUTER FAST, GOOD LUCK APPLICANTS.

🚨 China Just Gave The World Access To Quantum Technology
China has reportedly released the world’s first open-source quantum operating system — and it’s free for anyone to download. Until now, quantum computing tools were mostly locked inside private labs and research centers.
This breakthrough could allow developers, students, and researchers around the world to explore powerful quantum technology, helping speed up discoveries in AI, cybersecurity, medicine, and science.
Some experts believe this could change the future of computing forever… and the global tech race may have just entered a completely new era.

$NVDA is making quantum computing easier to build with CUDA Q Logical which is a new platform that helps researchers design systems that can correct their own errors and run useful applications.
Fermilab already cut development from 5 months to 3 weeks while another team modeled 1,000 logical qubits with ~10x less hardware.

The amount of Qubits required to break encryption keeps collapsing.
To break RSA-2048, the encryption guarding your bank, your messages, and every government secret, a quantum computer was estimated to need:
2012: 1 billion qubits.
2019: 20 million.
2025: under 1 million.
2026: as few as 100,000 to 400,000.
Iceberg Quantum showed under 100,000 qubits using smarter error-correcting codes, serious enough that the field's top skeptics engaged instead of dismissing it. Q-CTRL, the company backed by the CIA's venture fund, published Q-NEXUS: 190,000 to 381,000 qubits, running the attack in 9 days. During an RSA attack, 96% of qubits sit idle, so park them in cheap memory, like a valet lot for qubits.
The lock never changed, RSA is the same math it was in 2012. The machine needed to break it shrank 5,000x from THINKING alone, before hardware improvements count.
Industry roadmaps target hundreds of thousands of physical qubits by the early 2030s. The requirement is falling into the range the machines are climbing toward. Yesterday's IonQ blueprint needed just 20,000 for Bitcoin's curve.
This is why the NSA set migration deadlines, why a presidential order made them binding, and why agencies harvest encrypted data today.
These are research estimates, not demonstrations. But so was the 1 billion figure. The estimates have never once moved in encryption's favor.

CHINA IS BUILDING A FLEET OF QUANTUM SATELLITES.
Micius, the world's first quantum satellite, is dead. It burned up in Earth's atmosphere in January.
But Beijing didn't mourn it and already started their newest fleet.
The replacement is already flying. Jinan-1: a 23 kg payload instead of 250 kg. Ground stations under 100 kg instead of 13 TONS. Roughly 45x cheaper, generating keys hundreds of times faster. Last year it linked Beijing to South Africa, 12,900 km, the first quantum-encrypted connection between hemispheres in history.
Micius was a flagship and a one off that proved a point. Jinan-1 is a PRODUCT. Small, cheap, mass producible.
The fleet is scheduled and more low-orbit microsatellites, a medium-orbit satellite around 2027 covering continents per pass, and a geostationary satellite named "Dawn" enabling quantum communication in daylight, continuously.
Underneath: 12,000+ km of quantum fiber, 145 nodes across 80 cities, serving hundreds of government agencies and banks.
Meanwhile America's first quantum satellite still doesn't exist. The US is instead putting all its effort in compute and sensing.

THE QUANTUM INTERNET IS COMING
Remember when I said China leads the quantum network race? The US just answered twice in the same week.
Result one: Stony Brook and Brookhaven National Lab sent quantum information through open air across 13 miles. No cable at all. The first US demonstration of its kind.
Result two: a NIST led team transmitted entangled photons across 62 kilometers of fiber. Not lab fiber but an existing, ordinary, already in the ground telecom cable. The toughest real world test the quantum internet has passed.
Why both are hard: entanglement is the resource that makes quantum networks work, and it's absurdly fragile. Temperature, vibration, atmosphere, the noise of regular traffic in nearby fibers, all of it destroys quantum states. Getting them through 38 miles of commercial cable, or 13 miles of open sky is a massive feat.
But kilometers aren't the whole story.
China's famous 12,000 km quantum backbone runs on an older architecture, trusted relay nodes. Every few hundred kilometers the signal stops, gets measured, gets re-sent.
What NIST demonstrated is the next architecture which is entanglement over real infrastructure, end to end, no trusted middlemen. And it rides fiber that's already underground. Every telecom on earth already owns the hard part.
What Stony Brook demonstrated is the path off the ground entirely. Free space links are the stepping stone to quantum satellites, the one domain China has monopolized since Micius launched (Though its had its problems).
So overall, China built more kilometers of the old design over a decade. The US just demonstrated the new design on buried cable AND in open air, in seven days.
This race has just begun.
