Do you want to help our lab learn how mammalian cells maintain a healthy genome, how this can change during ageing and cancer, and how we can target these changes for patient benefit? Our laboratory is hiring multiple funded post-doctoral positions to explore these questions/1

Today is @UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science. In 2022 it’s time to shift the focus from recruitment (which is not the main issue) to retention (which is an ongoing problem). This is the current situation in Australia👇🏻, lack of funding of women the biggest cause.

ALT This shows the notorious scissors graph for women and men in Australian science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) academia. It shows a higher proportion of women in the early stages of STEMM careers (PhD students to postdoctoral fellows), and a significant drop in women at the independent laboratory head stage declining sharply to show that less than 30% of women are Professors. This has not changed much between 2014 and 2019, which are both represented here.

Why the fly?
"Hence, work in fly gives access to flexible experimentation, where try-and-error is a feasible strategy to overcome the challenging enigmas posed by biological complexity"
Funding panels should not overlook the lowly fruit fly!
