In 2024, applications for IMT outstripped the number of posts available by 73%.
‘We risk abandoning a generation of UK medical graduates to an uncertain future. We urgently need to understand why competition ratios are changing so quickly and improve the way we shortlist, interview and appoint doctors in training.’
Chair of our Student Foundation Doctor Network, @SeanCoghlan_, speaks out as we publish a new position statement on competition ratios.
In our new position statement, we’re calling on the UK government and NHS England to take this situation seriously and bring forward solutions in time for the 2026 recruitment round: ow.ly/AOpN50V1Qy7
Did you know? Only around 1 in 4 IMT applications leads to a job that allows doctors to continue their medical training. Doctors tell us they are worried and uncertain about their future in the NHS. We are calling for a 4 nation review. rcp.ac.uk/policy-and-campaig… @dr_aon

We are 3 years on from the joint call from @RCPhysicians @RCPEdin @rcpsglasgow for a multi-year budget for health and social care in Northern Ireland. That document was entitled “The Time is Now” - perhaps we should rename it “The Time was Then”…

Many thanks for raising this today @ColinSDLP - we need robust reporting on the numbers of patients receiving corridor care and their clinical outcomes @RCPhysicians @RCP_NI
RCP lead fellow for Northern Ireland @dr_aon said 'the majority of my time is spent in side rooms, corridors & waiting rooms. Northern Ireland is already lagging behind the rest of the UK on waiting lists and staffing levels.'

Too many patients are being treated in corridors and chairs. It's unsafe, undignified & unacceptable.
That is why we & @theRCN have been calling for provider-level data on care delivered in temporary environments.
Delighted that @nhsengland has now announced that NHS trusts will report against a new corridor care metric from this month👇
A hospital is recruiting nurses to work 12-hour shifts in its corridors caring for sick patients stuck waiting for a bed ⬇️

#RCPupdate Great talks on dementia; Parkinson’s disease & IV iron Rx in ortho geriatric setting but my interest in type 1 diabetes means I’m most struck by Una Graham’s overview on insulin pumps/feedback loops. Game changer. Alas NI is under provided for yet again! 😢#HSCteam
Rounding off a great morning with a presentation from Dr Ferghal McVerry on vasculitis and an RCP update from Dr John Dean @RCPhysicians #RCPUpdate

"We stand in solidarity with our colleagues in the health service who work tirelessly every day to help patients in times of greatest need."
This week, we led a joint statement from professional health bodies in Northern Ireland to condemn the rioting in Belfast. 👇

ALT A statement from multiple health professional bodies which reads "We are appalled by the scenes of rioting in Belfast this week. It is unacceptable that local businesses have been attacked and that as a consequence, health service staff feel under threat. There are also reports of nurses deciding to leave Northern Ireland because they feel so unsafe. We stand in solidarity with our colleagues in the health service who work tirelessly every day to help patients in times of greatest need. We offer our support to all those affected."
