Costa Rica has officially presented my candidacy for @UN Secretary-General.
I want to thank the President, government and people of Costa Rica 🇨🇷 for their trust & support.
I’ll work tirelessly to honour that trust and chart the course for a reformed UN. rree.go.cr/?sec=exterior&cat…
#newUN

“How does the United Nations choose the person who will speak in the name of ‘We the Peoples’?”
A line from a recent @Diplo_Watch essay on how the next Secretary-General is chosen, and on what the office is for.

The United Nations is not delivering on its most fundamental promise. This is why reform is at the heart of this process.
For me, reform is about enabling the United Nations to be effective at the job it was created to do. That job is peace.
When the last Secretary-General race took place, over 130,000 conflict deaths were recorded annually. Last year, more than 240,000 were estimated to have lost their lives.
The United Nations needs to change, structurally, culturally and operationally. We must reform to deliver peace.
The new edition of my newsletter sets out what that change looks like. #newUN

In this conversation with @CNNEE's @gfrias, I reiterated that reforming the United Nations is essential to restoring trust in our Organization and strengthening its ability to respond effectively to the alarming rise in armed conflicts. To achieve this, I am committed to listening to and working with the entire UN membership to find common ground, take risks and deliver solutions for those who need us most. #newUN
#newUN
Thank you, President Laura Fernández (@laurapresi2026), for reaffirming Costa Rica’s support for my candidature for UN Secretary-General.
Costa Rica taught me that institutions must be measured by the difference they make in people’s lives. My commitment to UN reform is grounded in experience: leading change, building agreements and delivering results.
Independence, impartiality and respect for every Member State will remain at the heart of that commitment. #newUN

El sector privado, la sociedad civil y los países tienen hoy más capacidades que antes. Necesitamos aprender a asociarnos con otros para resolver muchos de los desafíos que tiene el mundo hoy. La ONU es única, pero no está sola. #newUN
Regional organizations are essential partners in advancing multilateralism. The UN brings unique legitimacy and convening power; by working hand in hand with regional partners, we can build on their capacities, reinforce collective action and deliver more effective responses to shared challenges.
I thank the Philippines for convening the ASEAN New York Committee (ANYC) for a rich and constructive exchange on strengthening UN–regional partnerships, advancing preventive diplomacy and fostering a more agile, effective and responsive United Nations. #newUN

1/2 I am grateful for the support received from UN Security Council members. Reported results again place me ahead, with consistent backing since July’s first vote. I will keep working with every member to build the consensus needed.
2/2 At this defining moment for the UN, I remain committed to peace and security and substantive reform. I will keep listening to members and discussing my proposals for a more efficient, effective and accountable UN that serves people better. #newUN

Replying to @RGrynspan
This is the kind of leadership the UN needs: the courage to mediate, accept setbacks and try again—matched by the discipline to streamline mandates and make the institution more effective. Rebeca Grynspan is setting out a serious, pragmatic vision for a UN that acts with purpose.
“I think that the UN has become too risk-averse. You are the one that has to take the cost of rejection, the cost of failure, and try again. That’s the job of the UN.”
“Some consolidation and rethinking of how to carry a mandate is necessary in many of the fields that have been expanding in the UN.”
“Peacemaking has to be at the center of the efforts of the UN.”

The private sector, the civil society, and the countries today have more capacities than before. We need to learn to partner with others to solve many of the challenges that the world has. The UN is unique, but is not alone. #newUN
“It is the time to do better with less, [and promote] a revitalized organization that is able to see that its brightest days are ahead of it.”
@Reuters’ @davidbrunnstrom and @LivvyLepoids quoted these words back in April, and I still hold to every one of them. There is duplication and unhealthy competition across the United Nations system. I will be the delivery Secretary-General: that means changing the incentives behind that behaviour and moving decisions from headquarters to the field, close to the people we serve. #newUN

Bureaucracies are risk-averse by nature, so leadership has to bring risk into the equation: the only failure the United Nations cannot afford is not trying. Peace operations need focused, realistic mandates, and member states and the Secretariat need enough trust to tell each other the truth about what is working on the ground. Much of this can be done today. I made this case at the closing session of the Challenges Annual Forum at United Nations Headquarters. My thanks to @ChallengesForum and @FBAFolke for an honest and practical discussion. #newUN
#newUN
Science and technology are opening amazing opportunities for humanity: artificial intelligence, renewable energy, the possibility of defeating diseases we could not defeat before. The UN has to provide that space so everyone can benefit from the opportunities ahead. #newUN
