Huawei and Qualcomm just signed a multi-year patent license deal today. Here's what you need to know.
The deal was announced Monday, October 5, 2026. Huawei and Qualcomm call it a broad, multi-year patent license agreement with cross licenses to each other's patent portfolios. Fields covered include 5G, compute, AI and networking.
Qualcomm is also buying certain Huawei U.S. patents. Huawei says these relate to computing, AI and networking. Global Times reports the deal is pending regulatory approval.
The story is going viral because of who is paying whom. Tech commentator Abhishek Yadav says it is the first time Qualcomm will pay Huawei patent royalties for 5G and AI. Until now, Huawei was the one paying Qualcomm to use its tech. Huawei is also the company the US tried to cut off with sanctions and a ban on buying American chips and tech. His post drew 9,000+ views.
Bloomberg reports Qualcomm will also license the patents behind Huawei's LogicFolding chip technology. LogicFolding is a chip design that folds circuits in 3D instead of keeping them flat. Yadav says that fits about 53% more transistors in the same space. Huawei has said LogicFolding targets 1.4nm-class chip density by 2031 without EUV. Some commentators call the license a rare endorsement of Huawei's homegrown chip capabilities from a US chip giant.
Huawei says the deal reflects mutual recognition and a shared commitment to intellectual property rights. It also says it follows fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory licensing principles.
Key numbers:
- Deal length: multi-year
- Fields: 5G, compute, AI, networking
- Qualcomm buys certain Huawei U.S. patents
- LogicFolding: about 53% more transistors in the same space, per Yadav
- Huawei's total patent licensing deals expected to pass $6.9B, per one investor account
Financial terms of the Qualcomm deal were not disclosed in the material, and the deal awaits regulatory approval.
For the first time ever, Qualcomm will pay Huawei patent royalties for 5G and AI LoL ๐
Both companies signed a new multi year licensing deal, and this time Qualcomm is the one paying.
Till now it was Huawei paying Qualcomm to use its tech, and Huawei is also the company the US tried to cut off with sanctions. And this is the same Huawei that the US banned from buying American chips and tech.
Now Huawei owns so many 5G and AI patents that even Qualcomm has to pay for them ๐
