HEXHAM - Old Hexham in Winter :
•••
A cold October night. Snow falling on the cobbles of old Hexham in the 1890s.
The gas lamps glowing warm. The Abbey standing over the town in the moonlight.
Horse carts on Priestpopple. Quiet streets. The Tyne Pool still in the snow.
This is Hexham as it was - twinned with Brande, Metzingen, and Noyon - but on a winter's night like this, it belonged to no one but itself.

THE HERRING GIRLS OF OLD NORTH SHIELDS 🐟❤️
Long before the restaurants and bars of today, North Shields Fish Quay was a hive of activity, filled with fishermen, fishwives and the remarkable women known as the Herring Girls.
These hardworking lasses, many travelling down from Scotland, followed the fishing fleets along the east coast, working tirelessly to gut, clean, salt and pack the daily catch. Their days were long, their hands were cold, and the work was tough — but they played a vital role in the fishing heritage of the River Tyne.
Imagine the noise of the quay, the smell of the sea, the clatter of barrels and the sound of these women going about their daily work. This was real working life on the Tyne, when fishing was the backbone of communities like North Shields.
These women were more than just workers. They were mothers, daughters, wives and sisters, and their contribution deserves to be remembered just as much as the fishermen who went out to sea.
❤️ Did your parents, grandparents or great-grandparents work on North Shields Fish Quay? Do you have any family stories about the herring girls or the old fishing days? We’d love to hear them in the comments.
Let’s keep the memories of our North East heritage alive for future generations.
