Unlike a few others, I was prepared to give Andy Burnham the benefit of the doubt – and hold back on any trenchant criticism of him until he actually did something wrong. Well, just three weeks into his premiership that moment has finally arrived.
Yesterday, the Prime Minister announced that councils will get new powers to block new betting shops, bracketing them together with vape shops, 'dodgy businesses' and 'rogue operators'.
'The rise of vape shops, betting shops and rogue operators have replaced the shops, services and community spaces that people are crying out for' he declared.

In Memory of Michael Knightly
The team at Primus and Coolmore is deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of our dear friend and long-standing colleague, Michael Knightly.
For 26 years, Michael was a cornerstone of Primus and played an instrumental role in shaping the marketing, branding, and communications landscape of Coolmore. A true genius in his field, his sharp mind, creativity, and steady guidance were central to so much of our work and he has left an indelible mark on our team.
Paying tribute, John Magnier said: "Michael brought an unmatched commitment and standard to everything he touched. We were very fortunate to have had him as part of our team. His contribution to Coolmore was exceptional and his impact on our business will not be forgotten."
Beyond his immense professional talents, Michael was a true gentleman.
A brilliant colleague, a trusted mentor, and a steadfast friend to all who had the privilege of working alongside him; his influence extended far beyond the office into his local and sporting communities where he gave generously of his time and spirit.
Above all else, Michael was a devoted family man. His wife, Áine, and his two sons, Alec and Sammy, were his absolute world.
His presence, wisdom, and warm spirit will be profoundly missed by everyone across the Primus and Coolmore families, as well as the wider bloodstock community. We extend our deepest condolences to Áine, Alec, Sammy, his extended family, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing Michael.

The person most at fault was whoever took the surcingle off the jockey in the unsaddling enclosure (if indeed such an unbelievably stupid action did indeed take place as described in the stewards’ report - it’s hard to believe that anyone would actually do that).

A brilliant return from CENTIGRADE, who swept past the field at Southwell this evening under Edward Greatrex for trainer Ralph Beckett after 601 days off the track. Great to see him back in the winners’ enclosure 🏆

The NHF @Southwell_Races yesterday was worth 25% more than the same race in 2016. Over the same period the minimum wage cost for 21-25yo’s has risen by 83% and the cost of feed by approx 65%. These are core costs for trainers but don’t forget ERNIC, energy etc which have also risen exponentially. To an extent this is reflected in increased fees but poor returns is why Owner base is shrinking followed by the Training & Breeding industries.
Over the same time period the total income from the betting industry to racing (levy, media rights and sponsorship) is estimated to have risen from £220m to £425m (+£205m). Total prize money in 2016 was £137.6m and in 2025 was £195m (+£57.4m). Surely Prize Money should have risen in line with income from bookmakers?
The reality appears to be a shortfall of approx £150m which is why participants feel shortchanged and are wondering where all the money is going? (Figures not guaranteed to be 100% accurate but they tell the story of why we are where we are)
Another day and another good trainer packs up. Sensible for Noel but sad for the sport, the only way to turn the sport round is radical reform of prize money to create sustainability at all levels. Noel’s last winner would have earned £1917 for the Owner… says it all, completely unsustainable and the horses simply won’t be there in the future if this doesn’t change
