ALT The Charge Newsletter promo graphic Fast fact: Air travels four times as fast west to east within a hemisphere as it does north to south. This means Europe feels the effects of California fires within a week of the blazes. Princeton's Mark Zondlo and his Atmospheric Chemistry and Composition Group analyze smoke from wildfires and other types of air pollution to track how it moves and why it is concentrates in certain places at certain times. The goal is to help people better understand and prepare for poor air quality from increasingly intense fires, drought and extreme weather. Because of the long distance that smoke must travel east around the globe, fires in Europe are unlikely to have a big impact in California unless they are exceptionally massive.
