One of my heroes, Dr. Amos Wilson, who has since passed away, was once asked a question, and gave an answer that shaped my entire life.
Someone asked him, back in 1985, "Why do police do what they do to us?"
He paused, and thought, and said
"Because they can."
We have fought back against this time of barbarism and brutality with tools and systems that these cops don't respect or respond to.
The same stuff that was happening when I first started fighting against police brutality in 1999 when Amadou Diallo was shot 41 times is happening today 27 years later.
Why do they keep doing it?
BECAUSE THEY CAN.
The cop didn't even get fired.
He resigned.
He is safe and sound somewhere.
He was brutal FOR YEARS before this.
Why?
Because he could be.
Nobody is stopping them.

I hate this talking point so much. Maybe it's the geography nerd in me. I don't know... but this one really grates on my nerves.
Israel's location on the far Western edge of the Levant is of no strategic value or advantage to America re our presence and relationships in the Middle East. They have no excess abundance in natural resources, no important waterways or control/influence over strategic trade routes.
In the early days of the Cold War there was a weak but at least somewhat articulable argument to be made in terms of combating communism by promoting democracy in the region... but all that flew out the window with their total military occupation of the West Bank post-1967.
Israel's complete inability to exist peacefully with its neighbors, its refusal to end the occupation of Palestine and its status as a bitter, ungrateful welfare queen forever sucking on the American taxpayer teat makes it a toxic net-negative in foreign relations terms.
