using more degrees of freedom to accomplish tasks slower is bad engineering

“If an AI agent carries out a workflow consisting of 10 tasks autonomously but has a 10% error rate per task, the compounded error rate over the whole workflow is 65%.” There is a lot of nuance building production LLM systems

People often ask if ML or software skills are more the bottleneck to AI progress. It’s the wrong question—both are invaluable, and people with both sets of skills can have outsized impact. We find it easier, however, to teach people ML skills as needed than software engineering.
coming up with good ml research ideas is significantly easier than implementing them in a complex codebase — the returns to being an extremely good engineer are super high

We can't say with certainty whether AI will ever pose an existential risk to humans given an infinite timeline. But what we *can* say with absolute certainty is that there is no direct path from current technology to a "hostile AI takeover" scenario -- whatsoever. Worrying about Skynet today is as if scholars from the 1500s said "gunpowder weapons have been making exponentially fast progress recently, so we may soon have bombs that could annihilate an entire province". It may well come to pass *eventually*, but that technology will have nothing in common with 1500s technology. What's more, when it comes to pass, any preparation effort you made in the 1500s (writing treatises and rulebooks?) will have been laughably worthless and off-topic.
